Official Shadow of the Colossus Thread (reviews out)

Review embargo is up and they are very good so far:
Playstation Lifestyle: 10
IGN: 9.7
Polygon: 9.5
Eurogamer: Essential, one of the greatest remakes of all time
Gamespot: 9
quote:
The true definition of a classic, the gameplay and story of Shadow of the Colossus are every bit as great and emotional today as they were in 2005. This outstanding remaster skillfully enhances those qualities with improved controls, performance, and sheer graphical beauty. It remains one of the best PlayStation games ever made, and it’s wonderful that Sony has brought it back to the fore so a new generation of gamers can experience it without having to look past its aged facade.

Is this the one where you climb huge beasts?

All of the Team Ico games have been Sony exclusive, so this one will probably stay the same.

The game is good (the original) but I think it's vastly overrated.
This remaster could fix some of the performance problems, so i'll reserve judgment for now. But the controls are also garbage.
The original was vastly overrated. I think it was a product of its time. It aged horribly.
That said, I'll check it out for sure and eat crow if I'm wrong.

How so?

Funny since it was the only game of it's kind at that point.

I won't defend the controls of Team Ico games. Some of the most infuriating mechanics in any game i've played.
I personally consider it one of the best games of that generation and I can't wait to play this.

At first glance, I thought it had a monster robot dong in the picture. Too bad it doesn't...

Your taste in games I will never understand.

Well how about you do a slight bit of research before talking. It runs in 60 fps with no stutter on PS4 pro, and a steady 30fps lock on a normal PS4.
The controls are also redone.

I played the original (on PS2) for the first time a little over a year ago and the game is indeed a masterpiece.
Even with the 'bad' PS2 graphics and controls, it was still awesome.
Unique gampelay (it's like an action puzzle game, if that even makes sense) and one of the greatest sound tracks in video game history. It's challenging in a fun/stimulating way. You rarely die but spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to take down the things and even when you figure it out you still have to execute. When you finally figure something out and do it, it's very satisfying.
Lots of people probably missed this since it was a niche game all the way back almost 15 years ago, you should def. check it out.
It's not a game for everybody though. If your favorite games are like Call of Duty you probably won't enjoy this.

This game is overrated and I'm not the only one who thinks that.
This will probably be a good update bc the original was broken.
The concept is cool and it was new at the time. But the entire world is empty, there is nothing in the vast world but the colassus, and they are all more or less the same to defeat.
I think it gets the praise it does because of the era it came out in. The nostalgia is real.
The ps2 version is really bad, it didn't age well. It will be interesting to see if this remake can breath life into an otherwise void game.
I know the hype the game gets. IMO It's just not that good. As it staands
I am going to buy the remake and give it another shot.
I didn't play it till well after it's released so the controls really killed it for me.
I hope this time around I can enjoy it.

Do you understand what my statement meant?
That's precisely WHY it's a product of its time.
Back then it was fresh and new, and groundbreaking, I haven't disputed that.
But it hasn't aged well. Go back and play the orginal. There are ps2 games that have stood the test of time and this isn't one.

You know whats funny about this discussion
No Man's Sky
FFXV
TLJ
Are critically acclaimed, all of them. When I mention that to people they contend square/disney/hello games were "paying off critics" with no proof to back it up.
Shadow is revered, I get it. It's just not that good to me. It's a boring world, empty, nothing to do, items to collect, etc but hold your sword in the air and walk to the colossus. The fights are obviously the focal point and they are fun but get old after the 5th or so one.
MHW is the same way to me. It has good parts, but the overrall game is boring. Too much walking around aimlessly to me.
But both of these games are in the "untouchable" realm. Team Ico is worshiped by sony fanboys and capcom is, well, capcom.
At least I'm not sitting here claiming that sony and capcom are paying off reviewers because my opinion isn't popular. But that's the attack I get when doing the same thing. Double standard much. This is a message board. It's made for discussion. I don't know why everyone has to resort to name calling, and middle school tactics when someone doesn't agree with them.
TD is just full of people that don't like non-popular opinions and that's obvious now, and sad.

TLJ is. But no, not the others.
FF15 and No Man's Sky are not critically acclaimed. Unless an 81 and a 71 metacritic score is good to you.
Monster Hunter World 91
Shadow of the Colossus 91
I think those qualify though...

This is bullshite or you just have never played the game before. You are never walking around aimlessly unless you don't know how to play. MH has more depth to it than most video games, that is why hardcore players love it. It isn't some conspiracy that Capcoms stock is the highest it has been since 2001 after the release.

What are you talking about? Team Ico has released 3 games, 2 which happen to be great. When are people fanboying for them? Capcom fanboy, there are those? Capcom has been getting shite on for years until RE7 and MHW. If anything you seem to shite on Sonys exclusives for some odd reason.

Why in the world do you keep going on about this paid reviewers thing?
1. Nobody brought that up.
2. Those games had shite or mediocre reviews.

My two handsdown favorite games of this gen are Bloodborne and Horizon so that's not it. And all signs point to GOW being on that list to me.
I preferred Ico over SOC, just my opinion. So what if you don't like it. I posted this to post a different point of view over the usual circle jerk of 9/10 games.
I've even said I'm going to buy it and give it a shot.
My main problem is that the ps2 version control and ran like dogshit.

I feel like I'm responding to a troll post but whatever...
I"m sure every critically acclaimed game in history has individuals that didn't care for it. Personal preference and all.
The original was a perfectly fine and functional PS2 game.
You seem not to grasp this is a purposeful design decision. You can disagree with that decision but you state it in a way that you think they just like ran out of time and forgot to add trash mobs along the road.
The game got masterful praise when it was originally released, how is that nostalgia?
You found the game 'boring' it seems and that's perfectly fine. It isn't the most action packed game, that's not what they were going for. If you want a game with lots of stuff to do and lots of enemies and just more stuff 'going on' that's fine.
This isn't supposed to be that sort of game though, take it or leave it.
Your criticisms reminds me of when Peter Griffin was criticizing the Godfather for being all talking and not funny enough, as though it was supposed to be a slapstick comedy.
I'm not sure why... It's the same exact game you found so lackluster from before, just with improved visuals and controls. They went out of their way to make it as much the same as possible. You'll likely just find it 'boring' all over again.
