I'm guessing that's how this works.
The one water Pokemon I have I caught in a park near a pond. I mainly come across birds and rats, that sounds like Louisiana to me.

Yeah pretty much always birds and a rat spawn somewhere around me. The only types I haven't had spawn are fire and ghost.

So far, it's a fun little exploration game but I wish they had put more of a collaborative or social element to it.
Trading and battling with others is one of the largest appeals of the original Pokemon franchise. I can't believe there's not a system in place for it.
I wish you could add friends or find other players nearby to form teams with to take over gyms and then have to proactively defend it.
I'm sure some of these features will come in future updates, but they had a really long time to implement these things.

There will be, ingress is all social and has what you are asking for, this game is still in early stages, it will get to where ingress is with the social community.
I know one thing, I miss beta already. We made what we call farms in ingress to get gear. They are normally loaded with portals and where we hangout. Well this is now where all the pokestops and gyms are because this game is built off the back of ingress. Our hideaways are full of you fricks now.
If you want to find out where to go to play, create an ingress account and go to ingress.com/intel
There is an overlay for Firefox and chrome that has scripts for Pokemon. It's called iitc.
Or just look for the portal dense areas and that is where the pokestops and gyms will be...

Something is wrong with my game. Every time I'm almost done finishing off a gym. It doesn't let m finish off the final Pokemon and I have to close the game and restart. Has happened 3 times now.

1 hp bug, Reddit is full of the same reports. Just move on to another gym.

Just been playing for an hour, but I have 9 pidgeys, zubat, goldeen, clefairy, and an oddish. I am clearly better than Ash, but I am not quite on Gary's level. Life is good.
