How can anyone be "bummed" at this? I'm honestly at a loss. I love Steam and bundles as much as the next guy, but they inhabit a completely different sphere than console in many respects. Consoles are not really for indie, $5 games. Things are moving that way, of course, but I fail to see how this change is remotely salient to that. Or anything else really, besides slight convenience. You know what's not just a slight convenience (like having to walk 5 feet to put a game in the console, or bringing a small 1-pound box along to a friend's house if they don't already have it)? Not being able to play at all if your internet at your house goes down for a day (if you even have it accessible where your console is). Not being able to lend a game to a friend if you're done with it and they want to give it a try.

Jesus you people are so thick-headed.

They need to retail physical copies of games at $60 and then provide downloadable versions on release day for $45. If people insist on physical copies they still have that option but you will convince most consumers of a digital model through lower prices.

This for 1000 please.

No way. Not going to happen. While I agree there should be a digital download discount, but expecting any more than 5-10% is reaching. Vita titles are all 10% for the PSN versions, but that's a handheld. This has lead to a majority of digital sales over retail (despite the fact the memory cards are super expensive).

Then you are cutting out the retailers that you rely on to sale your hardware. No way that happens without a huge backlash. They make zilch on the hardware and make it up on game and accessory sales. That's the only reason they tie up money and floor space to stock and sell the hardware is that they hope you buy games and accessories while you are there.

With the Steam model those same retailers could have still sold games via the form of digital keys. If you let retailers sale digital keys for $45 now then who would be willing to take the $15 hit?

Publishers who already lose money to used games would now have to lose money on first party license as well.

Retailers already only make like $10-$20 profit on new games.

Xbox only makes $10-$15 on their per game licensing.

So who do you want to take the hit?

With the Steam model the publishers could take the hit because they are no longer competing with used games. Xbox was also willing to take a hit since they also make nothing off of used games.

They both would have made it back on volume.

This is what would have allowed the Steam model to work.

Any word on if kinect is still required to be online in order to use the debone? Did this change?

For whatever reason I still believe ps4 will end up having games that look and play smoother than xbone after devs start pushing and testing its limits under the hood. I thought maybe xbone 's cloud based computing might make make it to where ram and what not didn't matter but isn't this out the window ?

No. Developers will spend inordinate amounts of time and money coding a separate version of their game for those individuals who will be online all the time and want to take advantage of the power of the "cloud".

Consumers just need to be cognizant that there will be different versions of the game.

They need to offer a kinect-less model now for $399-$450. I'll be on board and leading the hype train. As it stands though I still have my 4 ps4's on preorder. Xbone basically just pulled a Netflix

It's not about having to put a physical copy into a console at all.

It's ignorant to even think that has anything to do with it though it is convenient.

They might actually do that. There is no way I'd bet on any action Microsoft may or may not take at this point.

Or don't listen to Tom that has yet to give one good reason why it wouldn't/won't work.

You will never see steam type deals on consoles. I'd rather be able to borrow games from friends or buy a used game at a good price then save a small amount from the "quick price drops we would see if used games are eliminated"

Or we just want cheaper games.

Posted this earlier but you may not have seen it:
Saints Row IV $50 on steam
Saints Row IV $60 on consoles

The platform without a used market gets it for $10 cheaper at launch. Games also get cheaper much quicker on PC. I bought a copy of The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition for $6 today for PC. The price of the used game at Gamestop right now is $28. Now, which one would you prefer? Do you love used games that much that you'd rather pay that much more for them? Even when not on a summer sale, a BRAND NEW copy of The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition on PC is $20, still cheaper than a used copy at Gamestop.

Xbox was going to still allow this and even let you do it digitally with 10 friends or family.

You do realize used game prices are a good bit higher than Steam games and sales...right?
