I think the sky is the limit on this one. I went nord just because I like to be "even" on all my stats in most games I play, and they always make "human" races the "even" race in fantasy games.

I would walk to the capital city to the east of where you enter the mountainside to ascend to meet the greybeards, then pay 20g for a carriage ride back to whiterun

I'm in the same boat you're in -- I got MW3 and then Skyrim a few days later. I haven't every playing this intense of a RPG game (last one I really played would probably be Zelda: OoT on N64). I have a bunch of friends playing Skyrim, so I decided to get into it too.
I've only logged like 2-3 hours of playing, and I haven't really done anything. I'm still just roaming around, clicking stuff trying to get the hang of if.

1. Run up a small cliff and shoot giant
2. Jump off small cliff before giant hits you
3. Shoot at giant on small cliff
4. Repeat
5. 20 mins later -> Profit

I wouldn't even try killing giants until much higher levels. Trolls are beatable, you just have to find what works best for you. Ive used fireballs from a distance then that first Shout to stun when they get close.. a little melee then pull back, rinse, repeat
