I knew LSU would lose this game because of fallout coming out Tuesday. That would be too good to be true

Can someone explain to me the purpose of preordering the game when I can just download it on Steam when it releases?

Having skimmed the thread, and based on chatting with a few folks, the fallout series seems like skyrim except with guns and in a post-nuclear setting.

Do I need to have played any of the other fallouts or can I just jump right in with this one?

Also, is either melee or range easier to start with, or have the games been pretty well balanced?

Will be picking this up for the PS4 and playing the hell out of it over thanksgiving.

Cheers all, and happy gaming.

Nope, jump right into the Vault.

Playing NV right now. Will there be some new form of transportation in FO4? I'm getting tired of slow mo running around an empty world

You can jump right in and play. There's a lot of lore and things to go along with the series but you can read the fallout wiki page to catch up on all that. There are also videos on youtube you can watch. But none of those are essential to know when jumping into this game. It's fun to know though

It would seem so. From the information out there, the new power suit is supposed to act like a vehicle, so I'm assuming there are other vehicles to be found. However, there is/was a video of someone running across the map in 10 minutes so...

Well, yeah, there's that too, but I didn't want to make it too easy for him.

The fun is exploring and discovering for the first time. I don't need that on the return trip.

If I liked skyrim, will I like fallout? I've heard the whole "skyrim with guns" thing but it's really that similar?

And for my first time playing, what's TD's suggestion for initial skill point distribution?

The games are similar and different at the same time. There's much more emotion in Fallout than there is Skyrim IMO. If you enjoyed Skyrim then you'll enjoy Fallout.
