He is talking about the beginning. First part after the race/class starter mission. Not to the mage tower yet. Man I love DAO. I wish I could play it on PS4.

Mages are beast mode in DA:O, with the exception of friendly fire. You can single-handedly wipe out entire groups of enemies if you maneuver allies out of the way

Is Origins easy to control on PC? That's my only hang up on picking it up and replaying before Inquisition.

Origins is not compatible with a controller actually. It's not hard to handle though and it's not like it is a fast twitch based game.
