It really is a shame too because Nintendo has always had some of the best controllers.

Well that's not true.

NES - the classic
SNES - near perfect

then

N64 - the controller you only used half of and made using the d-pad a chore
Gamecube - that design (wavebird was legit, though)
Wii motes - ....I hate motion controls, so maybe I'm biased on this, but pass
Wii U - hold this TV for me

Don't get me wrong, I played the crap out of the 64 and GC, but other than their pro controllers, you know, the alternatives for their main hardware, they've all been suspect.

Glad you added the note about the Wavebird. That thing was great. THe Gamecube controller is a great controller for NIntendo games. It was, however, inefficient for some big typically non-Nintendo, genres: Fighting Games and sports games in particular. But for FPSs and Nintendo games, it was great.

From a usability standpoint - they limited games too much. But they were a necessary alternative for video games to keep iterating and finding new things.

Had the first pro controller as well, which was excellent and possibly better than the current Pro Controller.

Suspect for the hardcore, FPS/Sports gamer. For everyone else, they worked extremely well. The N64 controllers in particular, while not pretty - actually worked well for introducing non-gamers to 3D control. Now we view it as common, but not so much then.

As usual, Nintendo's focus has been on their own games and non-gamers. And that's one of the reason they iterated, for good AND for bad, rather than keeping the same controller like Sony/MS have. They push boundaries where needed, and sometimes miss the mark here and there.

I still don't get the joycon arguments though. They are perfect for handheld, for traveling, etc. When I boot up to play something for 3 hours, typically I'll use a Pro, but for quick hour or less gaming sessions they are perfect.

Perhaps, but I was never confortable having my hands that far apart when playing, hence why I hated that Wii U tablet. That's a preference on my part, but then take them off, way too small, plus the horrible analog placement on the right one.

I feel like I've said this a million times on this board, but the month or so I borrowed my friends switch, I used primarily the pro controller, which is essentially the OG xbox S controller. I borrowed it for a work trip and played maybe a few minutes of it on the flight. Waited till I got to the hotel and hooked up the dock.

I liked the N64 controller a lot actually. It centered your thumb over the joystick in a way no controller since really has. The D-pad dong was so rarely in most games used it being strangely placed isn't a big issue. GC also had a great controller design too.

I guess I don't even consider the Wii and the Wii U Tablet real gaming controllers, they were just used to showcase those system's gimmicks first and foremost.

Probably fair.

I travel weekly and play Smash, Fifa, Platformers, etc with them. I never travel with the pro controller.

I will say the quality might be off on the first batch. My first set are feeling super loose. But my pair of blues have been rock solid.

Maybe different strokes, but I've had 0 issues with playing games with them. THey feel small, but they get the job done.

The Joycon (w/grip) and the Wii U gamepad weren't bad, but the analogue sticks felt horribly inaccurate. A pro controller is almost required for any kind of third or first person action game.

I also should not have to resort to third party peripherals just to have a dpad joycon.

Not sure why they hate analogue triggers either.

Speaking of controllers, I would love a controller laid out exactly like the xbox one or PS4 controller with six face buttons instead of four.

What is the talk of the Switch's Pro Controller sucking?

We have 2, love em. They are some of the better controllers Nintendo ever made. I rather it over the JogCons. I try not to touch those things.

Edt: We have 3 left hand Joycons and 1 right hand one. Every Joycon stick is fckked but 1 of the left hand ones. We don't have that travel/ghost issue, but it does get stuck.

Remember ppl, update your controllers.

But I'm the opposite customer, I want a home console experience, so I'm hoping they announce a pro model soon that caters to that side.

I have a bunch of kids, so this one is out for me. Are you saying the regular switch doesn't compete as a home console?
I'm debating between the regular switch and PS4, leaning to the switch because I assume it's more kid oriented.

It's only the D-pad, which for most games these days isn't a big deal. For 2D games which require very quick dpad movements, that's when some notice the frequency of incorrect inputs. There's YouTube videos on the subject. Essentially the pivot point in the middle isn't quite tall enough. There are some homemade hacks to alleviate the issue if you feel you're having them.

Yeah I'm aware.

Just don't play any games that would require it. I don't about buying a 3rd party left hand Joycon with the correct dpad around launch but it would really go unused.

I might like it better than the PS4 D-Pad. Neither d-pad is as good as the PS3/Xbox One.

Today Nintendo announces a revision of the original with substantial battery life improvement and new joy cons. I'm going to make get LSU joy cons.

Sort of disappointing that this isn't Pro. Either we aren't getting a Pro version, or they will do another revision in a year or two. Ugh.
