Get him a ps5. Tell him you’re old and out of touch so you don’t know the difference. He will thank you later.

My 11 year old has the X Box S. We do have the storage expansion card and game pass. He has the headset and the rechargeable batteries for the controllers. We've had no issues with any of it so far, and he's had it for 2 years.

Wait a year
PS5 pro will come out and chances are Microsoft will also release a mid generation upgrade as well
I don't think Madden is a good enough reason to buy a system personally and by Christmas the football season is practically over anyway.
On the 25th just have him open up one of these bad boys

X box Series S with 1TB is $299 at Dell.
Dell Website
The amazon link for the Series X is a good deal for just bit over $400.
I am a sucker so I would get the better system of the two (the Series X) at the Amazon link.
ETA: This is probably blasphemy, but I use an Elite 2 xbox controller on PC and it just feels better than the Dualsense on my PS5. Although the PS5 is the superior system, my controller preference should not factor into your decision.

Game Pass will save you lots of money on games.
Well, it saves ME lots of money on games.

True but with one issue, you cannot play the game from external storage unless you get the specific thing that plugs into the S' micro connector
I had a regular USB/SSD external drive...you can play most xbox one games directly from that drive.
It's only the games that REQUIRE that internal/fast storage (or the official expansion card) that won't play from the external drive. Admittedly, that's a LOT (or most) of the recent releases designed to take advantage of it.
But if you're getting gamepass, or have a digital library of older Xbox one/360 games, most of them will play directly from the external.
Of course the X has more storage. I have both, with the 1TB expansion card in both, so I don't really need the exeternal storage, but it is an option for a good number of older games.

As a teenage boy myself, get him the series X. Disk are way better dude phyiscal media will always be the way to go. Takes up less space and comes with more.
I got my first xbox one when I turned 10 or so. Its a great console and I still use it to this day. Just sayin...

Are you sure? Because they all have to download tens and hundreds of GB of data even if you have a disc.
I say this as someone who hasn't purchased a disc since early PS4 days, so I'm asking genuinely.

Yeah, but I think the hardware in the X is worth the 100 bucks or so to get a better system. If I wasn't a PS/PC house, I would have purchased that Amazon buy already.

seriously.
better spec'd system vs the series s
it'll do 4k over the series s 1440p
it plays 4k bluray movies
you can gameshare (discs) with friends or buy used at gamestop
it's a pretty easy choice and i'm not sure why he hasn't pulled the trigger on it, yet. why are we still talking about it?

While you still have to download data its not NEARLY as much, and plus you actually OWN the game.

Listen to everyone here when they say get the X.
You are looking at getting a gaming system that will be used over the next 3-5 years. The X is more future proof and will give you more options down the road in gaming performance. It is not worth trying to save $200 today, if you will regret it down the road.

When he decides to play Call of Duty..half that space will be gone.
