I don't know why y'all are acting as if Sony isn't offering digital downloads.

I disagree. I think they stand to lose ground on really establishing their network as the normal way of doing things.

This route Sony will still have people on physical copies heading into the next console unless at some point thy force digital onto people. If they do that do you know how much worse that would be for them and how people would feel like they were lied to?

By the end of this cycle the digital age will be in full effect and Sony and it's users will be the last full on adopters of it gaming wise.

Xbox is taking it head on from the start and like I said using this as a bridge to get there faster.

To be fair, we don't know yet if they will do this or not.

It's not that, but will the ps4 have to ability to share with friends features etc, if devs decide to go this route in let's say 2 years?

If Microsoft and XBO are so forward thinking, why wouldn't they just come right out and say it? Hey, guys...deal with it, we're going digital and you can't trade that stuff in. Who's with us?

E3 or the release was the place to say it.

You keep using the word "force" and that is the issue. If Sony is in any way smart, they would reduce the cost of digital downloads. Hell, a $5 reduction would stimulate a massive shift to just digital.

From a business perspective forcing your customers is a horrible idea.

Why? They are still offering digital.

And another way to look at it is that they are forcing change while offering no incentives for the consumer to want the change.

Sony offers digital downloads of new releases right now. I don't get what you're talking about.

We've heard about Microsoft's heavy investment into their server capacity to facilitate this shift in distribution, dedicated servers for MP, online checks, cloud computing, etc.

Maybe Sony isn't ready to jump head first with that type of financial commitment? MS has years of revenue coming in from Live accounts to support this infrastructure.

That's an interesting question that I have no answer to.

There may be a lot more to it than you or I know that prevents them saying this as of now. They are still working on how they will handle rentals if at all.

I don't think laying out the strategy for an entire console generation is the best idea 6 months before a console release.

Wasn't there someone who recently said that the cost of digital copies would not be cheaper than physical copies? I remember something like that.

I don't think it was Sony or MS though. Might've been EA.

I say the above because not forcing it early on will make the process of getting there that much slower for them and they will be behind in that market when Xbox is already reaping the benefits of all of their users are 100% digital.

When Steam came out and FORCED people to use it I remember it was very hated on. Look where it is now.

Digital rentals? You mean like Netflix or Amazon Instant or Hulu or OnDemand where you have limited possession of the digital property for a set amount of time? Sounds complicated.

Am I missing something?

lol thats what i guess ive been trying to get at.

Just took forever to get there. That is my main question. It probably wont happen at least then gen. You would think devs would give sony a chance if they were thinking about doing that, but you never know.

It was hated on also because the service sucked at the time.
