They could easily do as they have always done which is sell consoles at a loss (which I sure they are still doing even at 1000 but an ever bigger loss) and make it up through software which has been the way it has worked since consoles became a thing.

Sony is making more money than it ever has in its entire history of existence but we are supposed to believe they need to raise prices?

I do think MS is at least trying to provide more value for that price point if they are still going to stick with the "plays both PC and console games" announcement. If it really will play PC games, it's going to be one of the more affordable "plug and play" gaming PC options on the market.

I've seen some rumors that they might be backpedaling on that, but no indication in any public interviews.

This isn’t a fell for it thing. It’s basic economics. Those companies are not valuable because of their gaming departments (Sony does rely on gaming more, but still a minority of its business) so I don’t know why you think that is a gotcha.

Yes, consoles have historically been loss leaders. However, you have to make money on the games to use that model. Game prices have only gone up $10/game while the cost to make games has increased just as astronomically as making a console.

I like video games. All the better if they’re cheap. But, at the same time, it’s not realistic to expect it both ways indefinitely. These companies don’t get to go to their board of directors and pitch entire divisions that operate at a loss because just because we like games. They have to make financial decisions and that’s just reality.

People will pay. I guarantee you, just like every other company, they've done the math on this. Even if not as many people buy, they're making more per console.

Theyre just going to be buying mid range gaming pcs instead of consoles.

I have both a ps5 pro and a gaming pc that id describe as middle of the road power wise. The entire appeal of a console over that of a gaming pc, historically at least, were reasons including they were much cheaper not very slightly less expensive, the convenience and ease of use being just a system you plug and play into your tv easily but you can now do the same thing with your pc if you want to play it on the TV go right ahead, and physical media for those who care about it or enjoy collecting their games.

When the PS6 eventually come it will be at minimum 1000$. My personal guess is they will have two skews one at 1000 with pretty low storage capacity just like they did initially with the ps5, and a higher tier skew for 1250 that has 2 TB of storage. At this price point you are already starting to tread dangerously close to a perfectly capable but not anywhere top of the line type of gaming pc.

Since PlayStation is also killing physical disc if youre going to be forced into a digital only platform then PC provides so much better of an option as it is an open platform and Steam is a much better and more trustworthy company than Sony, and Sony hasnt produced any 1st party games from their own studios this entire generation that would justify choosing a shittier closed platform that has the worse network security of any of them.

People are just going to buy gaming pc's. If they decided anyone actually needs a next gen console as imo theyre pretty useless and unnecessary. We are no where close to even have pushed the ps5 system to its limits.
