Is there any game franchise that outclasses The Legend of Zelda?

At least historically speaking, what Nintendo has done with this franchise is just amazing.
Zelda I: Masterful adventure on the NES, gave an open world feeling on a primitive console
Link to the Past: Gave a truly awesome RPG adventure that was considered (and still is by some) to be one of the greatest games ever made
Ocarina of Time: Was one of the games that ushered in the 3D age and was hailed as revolutionary, and again gave a grand adventure on a scale never before seen.
Breath of the Wild: Gave us one of the best open-world experiences I've ever seen on a console. Combined the awesomeness expected of a Zelda game with Skyrim and Dark Souls sort of gameplay.
Every title in the franchise is at worst, good, and at best, a revolutionary masterclass. Nintendo's other staple in Mario might get the edge here, but this franchise has been one that almost defines the trends in the video game industry for a long time now.

And yes, I made this thread because I am fanboying the hell out of Breath of the Wild because I am addicted as sin to that game right now.

Outside of Breath of the Wild, the Zelda franchise has been irrelevant since the death of the N64.

Blow me.
Wind Waker and Minnish Cap were both awesome. And both awesome nicknames for your penis.

And Majora's Mask and a Link Between Worlds.

If you've played Ocarina of Time, you've played all the Zelda titles through Skyward Sword that released on home console platforms.
It's like if Ubisoft only released one or two Assassin's Creed games every console generation instead of once a year.
The only major difference is the number and design of the dungeons.
The handheld Zelda games all follow the template laid out by A Link to the Past but do show a little bit more originality.
I would not call the Zelda franchise a masterclass in game design though considering it took the franchise almost 20 years to evolve.

Lmao. That is all.

Absolute twaddle. Majora's Mask had one of the most inventive premises in all of gaming that no one has even tried to replicate. The only thing OoT and MM have are the basic controls. Everything else radically separates it.

Grand Theft Auto
Which borrowed quite a bit from Zelda.
I'm not answering that Zelda is the end all be all, but in the case of GTA....Zelda is one of the progenitors of Open World game design.
The problem with Zelda is its longevity, at least in this discussion. There might be more singular influential games (Quake, Super Mario 64, Tetris), but few have such a high overall level of quality as franchises, which is probably what the OP is asking.

Ocarina of Time was the basis for many open world games. The problem with Zelda is that they never really improved on the formula until Breath of the Wild. It was always same structure, same combat, and in some cases, same gameworld.
It's easy to trace the evolution of Grand theft auto from PS1 to PS2/Xbox to PS3/Xbox360 and beyond. Playing GTA 5 makes playing Vice City obsolete by comparison. Likewise, if you played Twilight Princess, odds are you'll get the same enjoyment out of Ocarina of Time if you can get past the graphics.
I can't think of any "bad" games Nintendo has ever made. Some of them are objectively better than others (Skyward Sword is pretty crap for a Zelda game but is still very solid), but they don't churn out titles every couple of years like third party developers.

As Dan Houser (founder of Rockstar and GTA director) said:

Anyone who makes 3-D games who says they've not borrowed something from Mario or Zelda is lying.

What does outclass even mean in this context? Of course there are several franchises I like more than Zelda. Does that mean they outclass it?

Historical influence and overall quality of each game in the series on average being very good

Survival Horror - Resident Evil
3rd Person Espionage - Metal Gear

Lightning Returns is actually pretty similar in its overall structure. Between the limited time dynamic and much of the game being based around "side quests" with each major area being composed of mostly self-contained main stories it's probably the closest game to MM in design. Unfortunately it's all kind of shallow and lacks MM's impact (though that may just be nostalgia speaking) but it's an excellent game nonetheless.
But yeah Zelda has typically had a decent amount of variety from game to game. Between the motion controls and overworld design Skyward Sword feels entirely different from any other Zelda game.
