Is the PS5 digital edition a good buy or pay the extra $100?

My 10 year old son wants one for Christmas and I didn’t know which would be the better buy. He mainly wants to play call of duty.

i'm gonna pay the extra $100 just for the ability to use it as a UHD blu ray player

Do they have a library of old PS4 games on disc already? That would definitely swing things in favor of the drive version. The PS5 is essentially fully backwards compatible with PS4.

Unless you already have a bunch of discs or want it as a blu ray player I wouldn’t bother

If it's for your kid you be able to get discs cheaper, used, than you will buying downloaded games.

Gonna vary from person to person.

Personally, I already have the vast majority of my games in digital libraries on all gaming platforms. I own about 5-6 PS4 discs from early releases, but from then on I went all digital. I haven't purchased a physical game in many years. I also don't watch many movies, particularly none on any disc form, so for me the extra $100 is senseless. However, if you're someone who does watch movies and wants to watch those HD blurays, or who does like having a catalog of physical discs to play, then the $100 is a good deal.

The only good reasons I can think of in favoring the Disc Edition:

HD Blu Rays
You want to the option to pay discounted Amazon/Walmart/Best Buy prices on games, rather than full price on PSN
You already have a lot of PS4 games on disc that you can imagine playing in the future
You like to buy used games
You have really shitty internet and it takes a while to download game files

(or a giant CD collection LUL)
