Information on why the Ubisoft split occurred

Some of you may already know this information, but this is for those who do not.
Luke Stephens is not a "woke" or an "anti-woke", to assuage anyone's fears. He really liked AC Shadows, despite disliking his preview copy. He is pretty forthright with news he gets, and he has several connections in Ubisoft.
Basically Ubisoft was on the verge of being a hostile takeover target and was desperate for an infusion of cash. High profile failures from Ubisoft meant they were unable to secure funding without severe accommodations. Tencent offered to buy them, but they (Ubisoft) wanted to pursue other angles.
After Outlaws failed hard, Tencent began to walk away.
Ubisoft begged them to reconsider, and for increasing funding and stake
Tencent told them they will only be willing to invest in the IPs that have any juice to them, Far Cry, AC, and I think Rainbow Six. That is why they set up a subsidiary. It was a hail mary to maintain control of the IP, effectively
Ubisoft also had to agree to double Tencent's stake in order to secure funding.
The good news is, they are stopping the "release per year" bullshite, and are going to focus on a new mainline title every 2-3 years

They gave up total control. They just delayed it for a few years.

Ubisoft’s been a car wreck for years. Not sure them giving up total control is necessarily bad thing.

I definitely do not disagree.
Meanwhile, a former team at Ubisoft just released what should be GOTY and will be in discussion for GOAT turn-based RPG. LINK
This, all while Clair Obscur also released on Game Pass day 1. AC Shadows did not, and is still doing worse.

In particular, this debate was fueled by the fact that the aforementioned Broche, as well as several of his team members, are fellow Ubisoft employees, with the Sandfall Interactive founder notably having been inspired to strike out on his own after finding himself “bored in their job [at Ubisoft] and wanting to do something different”.
As such, many have taken to comparing the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 against Ubisoft’s latest major release, Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
quote:
At this time of writing, Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ all-time peak Steam player count currently rests at 64,825, which it hit roughly three days after launch.
Not only did Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 reach 71,000 in just 24 hours, but in the same ‘three days post-launch’ window of time, it achieved a peak of 121,422 – three days after launch – even amid the sudden and gangbusters launch of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
(For reference, the game’s all-time peak has since risen to over 145,000 players.)
This, all while Clair Obscur also released on Game Pass day 1. AC Shadows did not, and is still doing worse.

Seems like only a matter of time before most game studios are owned by Chinese or Saudi holding companies.

Most of the people I know including myself sub to Ubi+ for a month for $17 and beat the game then unsub, so similar to Game Pass either way. Paying $60-80 for a single player game is dumb when you can just sub to something cheap for a month to beat it.

They stopped doing this back in 2018 with Odyssey. 2020 Valhalla, 2023 Mirage, 2025 Shadows. And Mirage was a spin off $30 non full entry so Shadows was their first full length main entry in 5 years.

Meh. I'll wait for it to hit Game Pass a few years from now. I have a physical copy of every other AC game except Mirage.

I don't think I've bought any Ubi games since Ubi+ debuted. But I also never go back and play a game more than once so buying is just pointless if any 'rental' option is out there.

I certainly see no point to purchasing digital games. You never actually "own" them. If you ever delete it from your system, and then it gets removed from whatever virtual store it exists on, you can lose access to that game forever.
I do buy physical copies of a number of games because they're bangers though. Usually when they hit deep sale prices.

Well then that is a nothingburger, that Ubisoft felt needed to be officially said for some reason.
Kinda like "return to form" and Disney's "quality over quantity" bullshite.

I love expedition 33 but i dont take this as the damning statement against ubisoft. I think its just how the gaming industry works. You cant be super successful staying under a big umbrella like ubisoft. The actual talent will always eventually strike out on their own unless they are the head dev.
The peons dont get paid shite and are overworked with crunches and as soon as they finish one project they just reset and start all over.
You could probably hit steam new top sellers list and go through 80+% of the new studios and find "former X" employees with X being EA, Ubisoft, 2K, Bioware, Riot.

Big companies are just riding the coattails of once successful franchises that were developed by actual gamers for gamers.
They can’t come up with anything new other than ways to nickel and dime you for a poor unfinished and rehashed/skinned product.
They don’t want to take the risk of a new IP and rather just “play it safe”.
That why people felt blind sided by some of the more popular AA titles. It’s like we have all been brainwashed and then something like EX33 or BG3 comes out and it’s like ohhhh this is what it feels like to actually love gaming again.

I don't think he was trying to knock Ubisoft, but the success of that game is an indictment of Ubisoft.

Rockstar seems to be the only AAA studio that doesnt fade

Some ebb and flow, like Capcom, but there are still a few who I still trust to produce a fun and complete title upon release. (ID, Insomniac, Guerilla to name a few) but Ubisoft take the cake as far as the number of favorite game series of mine that they pretty much ran into the ground ....or like Splinter Cell, just let waste. Konami being a close second........or maybe number one if I think about it.

They're going to have to come out with more than 2 games every 15 years for me to feel this way.

This better not frick up or delay the next ANNO release.
Posted on 5/9/25 at 8:37 pm to TigerFanatic99
I don't think Anno was part of the subsidiary.
So it won't get the funding boost, or the attention.
We'll see. Nobody knows for certain what this means for the non-subsidiary IP right now

I don’t believe any of that to be accurate.
He sounds like an American who doesn’t understand it’s a European corporation. Maybe he’d have a hot take if Ubisoft was headquartered in Delaware…but until then.
