Thanks for all your input guys. I noticed that at gamestop, you can get 30% bonus on game trade ins going toward the purchase of Skyrim. I have about 13 games that I haven't touched since Christmas so I'm hoping to get $10-$15 toward Skyrim. I'll probably play FF13 and see how I like it. If it is not terrible, I'll play it through and just save Skyrim for after football season is over with because with no NBA, I will have nothing to do

Didnt mind the combat system, still rather the old school tho. But I play FF for great stories and characters. FF 13 did not have this. FF has not had this since 10 imo.

Will probably play skyrim for 6 hours. Watch LSU and then play for another 4 or 5 hours today. Be warned.

I hated the fact that you never stay the same character.. I always seem to get attached to my characters when I play

I've never understood the love FF7 gets. Sephiroth is a horrible emo villian, Cloud is a meh and the story is only ok.
Go Diaf or eat those words! Blasphemy!
Seriously tho even up to this date I spent the most time on any console game playing ff7

I will say that as far as FF13 goes, it wasn't a terrible game, but it wasn't a good one either.
I thought Lightning as a character was pretty decent. Although, she is just a female version of Cloud. Cloud...Lightning...yea obvious connection is obvious.
There were some pretty cool additions to this game and imo it is a completionists nightmare. There are a lot of side activities.
Here is how I would grade the game:
1) The story was meh. I just didn't really care much for the main villains or the heroes and the story didn't really have an interesting feel to it. There wasn't much mystery or depth. It was a basic "this happens and this guy is evil, so, you need to go kill him" storyline. Like I said, no depth.
Story: D
2) The characters were terrible. Wait, hold on, let me rephrase that. The characters were fricking terrible. I have literally never hated characters in a video game as much as I hated some of those characters. Lightning was a female Cloud and she didn't bother me. Vanille was the only character I actually liked. Hope can die in a motherfricking fire. I hated that kid. I would actually let him die in battles some times just to do it.
Characters: F
3) Graphics were top notch. They normally are in turn-based games. Not much to say about that.
Graphics: A
4) Gameplay was alright. I'm not a huge fan of turn-based games. They kind of bore me, but all in all, as turn-based games go, FF13 was actually pretty damn decent. The addition of the Paradigm system made the fights more interesting.
Gameplay: B+
Overall: C-
Also, I just want to add that I really hate this game because of the fact that I got to the last boss and my save file corrupted. So, I will end this with a big FFXIII can go frick itself.

Don't get me wrong it's a fun game but I think the only reason it is remembered so fondly is because it was the first PSX Final Fantasy game. FF9 is superior in every aspect
Granted, FF9 is my 2nd favorite FF game and it is only slightly behind 6 in my opinion.

I hate that little bastard.
SPOILER!!!!
Snow killed my mom! even though she volunteered for her particular action and Snow actually was pulling her to safety until she slipped out of his hand!

The characters in VII were much stronger, IMO. I liked IX a lot, but never really cared much about the characters. Zidane was pretty annoying.

FF13 was awful. Lame, uninteresting characters, terrible story, and narrow, straight forward gameplay.

I slogged through the linear portion of the game thinking it would get better when it "opens up". Never happens. It is difficult to imagine Squaresoft ever recapturing the glory (for me at least) of FF7, 8 and 9.

VIII has the most developed characters.
VII has the best side quests.
X has the best side game with blitz ball.
IX and III are tied for best leveling system.
X-2 and up were shitty vanity exercises for Japanese manga writers. You are essentially doing 5 minutes of linear gameplay to fill the time between 30 minute cutscenes.

Blitzball was amazing. I literally spent more time playing blitzball than I did playing the actual game.

My friend finished the game and passed it along to me. First glance online is that I may be in way over my head. I don't play 360 too often and this seems like an advanced game. Has anyone played it and have any starting pointers?
Give it back, worst FF in the series.
My favorite all time is a tie between 10 and 7.

I've never understood the love FF7 gets.
You have to understand the technological leap that the PS1 was over the SNES - it made a wider-range gamers connect because it was able to convey emotions in much more visual fashion. It turned people that weren't RPG fans into RPG fans. RPGs weren't mainstream until FF7.
Combine that with emo characters with love triangles (and big boobs), cut scenes that were JIMP worthy for the era, a haunting soundtrack, and satisfying gameplay - I'm not surprised it's as popular as well-loved as it is today.
My favorites would still probably be in this order:
9
7
10
8
6
10/2
12
13
