I think Gen 5 Pokemon was the franchise’s peak

Best roster of Pokémon. Last generation before 3-D graphics. Post-physical/special split. No gimmicky mechanics like mega/dynamax. Solid story.

I kind of wish Gamefreak would have kept the games in this style.

Black/White and Black/White 2 were incredible. Massively underrated on release because of the lack of older pokemon in the game, but I think as time has gone on people have gotten over that.

The post-game in Black/White 2 was more content than all of Violet/Scarlet pre-DLC.

Also pixel art >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 3D models

But the fanbase doomed the franchise to go the wrong direction because nobody bought the game.

Yellow was my first game and still has a special place in my heart. The roster and story are solid, but the type mechanics are just beyond broken and that takes a bit away from replay value.

They made a major step forward in this gen. Natures, abilities, and weather-setting were solid additions and the story is compelling. I also really like the roster and would put it (tied with gen 1) only behind gen 5. It still needed the physical/special split to happen, though.

ETA: Also too much water for this landlubber.

I’m going with Gen 4. HeartGold and SoulSilver is the peak of the franchise.

I don't hate that pick.

My maybe hot take is that if Scarlet/Violet didn't look and run like complete arse, it'd probably be in my top 2-3 in the series despite the awful story. Terastilization is easily my favorite added mechanic in any generation. So much so that I hope it sticks around a while. It actually got me to dabble in PvP for a while.

I had honestly forgotten about HG/SS and could ALMOST get behind this if the Johto Pokedex weren’t such a mess. It has everything else in spades. I just despise the lack of availability of all the most memorable Pokemon of that generation.

That might be the one new mechanic I could get behind. It definitely breathed life into Pokemon who otherwise had no hope.

Gen 5 was when the “Story” went into overdrive. Gen 4 has a slow start, but once you get past the Major city, it cools off and lets you play, keeping the focus on You and Friends fighting Team Galaxy. Gen 5 is just overload with about 2-3 things that happen the first time you visit a route.

Legends Arceus was a breath of fresh air, and Scarlet/Violet would have been the start of a rally if they hadn’t fricked up the graphics (10 fps my arse). Interested to see AtoZ

I've always heard from other Pokemon fans that Black and White/Black and White 2 are some of the best games in the franchise. But, personally, I think the Generation 5 Pokemon are awful, so I've always stayed away. I often think of Gen 5 as the generation that started the trend of WTF looking Pokemon (Garbodor is the classic example). There are very few Pokemon from Gen 5 that I like.

Whaaaat?! I think that generation is just banger after banger. Serperior? Possibly my favorite grass starter of all time. Gigalith? One of the best rock-types since Golem. Escavalier, Jellicent, Chandelure….I really struggle to pick just six for my team I like so many of them. Some generations I struggle to fill out a full roster of six non-legendaries that I like.

Same here, bud. One of my favorite Pokémon of all time.

I say Silver and Gold. After that it was just diminishing returns.

Crystal was amazing for its time and the gen 2 remakes are the best Pokémon games of all time. Gen 5 is definitely up there for the best Pokémon games though. I really enjoyed Legend Arceus and have high hopes for Legend Z.
