Following up on other good MVs - I just finished The Messenger. The first half of the game is a 2D action platformer like the old Ninja Gaiden and then the second half turns into a metroidvania.
I found it to be one of the most annoying/obnoxious games I've played in a while. Can't really recommend it.

Any other good recommendations for indie Metroidvania?

Not exactly indie but “prince of Persia: the lost crown” is a good one
The rogue: prince of Persia is good, it just came out, rogue-like metroidvania, mix of hades and dead cells
Animal well got great reviews, it never clicked for me, still have it installed so I can give it another shot one day

I don't know that it would be that much of a stretch to believe they could make it bigger than the first HK.
Hell, we didn't understand how they were to triple the size of Hyrule in Tears of the Kingdom when compared to Breath of the Wild and they did it, thanks to the underworld/sky Islands mechanic.

Dang, I really enjoyed the hell out of the messenger. I thought it wasn't too bad at all to beat either.

I enjoyed the first half. Pixel art and music is god tier, but the actual gameplay is just frustrating. The lack of fast travel between portals is shameless padding. The biggest issue is that the game gives you all the tools in the first half and nothing in the second half. Traversal doesn't get more fun, gameplay doesn't evolve, everything stagnates. Really felt like a chore having to constantly backtrack and deal with the time mechanic. It's like a if a magician showed you how he does all his tricks, then the show continues with the same tricks for 4 more hours
Some of the bosses were well done though.

Yes, when it changes from NES to SNES...so so good. It's been so long since I've played it but I was going through a kick of playing that and then shovel knight.

Now Shovel Knight was really special. Amazing how they got all those characters to play so differently yet all were so fun. Spectre Knight was a blast

I'm so happy they changed the mechanic where the audio gets distorted when you take damage. I thought that mechanic in Hollow Knight was just awful.

I read somewhere that this is harder than the first Hollow Knight, but it's cheap enough that I'm going to go for it regardless.

Bought the game this afternoon and it's downloading as we speak. Not sure if I'll jump ahead of finally completing Bloodstained (Just have Dominique & Bael to defeat), or if I'll actually keep my gaming ADHD in check enough to finish one thing before starting another.

Bought it for the switch 2. Pretty pumped to get into this genre then not play another one for 4-6 months!

I picked up Bloodstained on a crazy sale they had last month and it runs flawlessly on the Switch 2. I got farther than I believe I did on the PS4 when it launched.

Played some of it on a plane, and it’s a bit of a slow start, but so is the original so it is expected. Gotten past the giant boss, but I’m getting my arse kicked a lot.
That being said, I think Pharloon is much larger than Hallownest. Only on the first floor, but it seems to be much wider than Hallownest, and there’s another land to the left that I haven’t gotten access to that I don’t know how big that one is either. The Citadel from where it’s marked doesn’t seem that high up, but I’m willing to bet that’s a false flag.
Also just with the soundtrack, I don’t understand how this game is only $20. Here’s a score from the boss I just beat and it’s pretty epic:

Also frick Greymoor. This place sucks. I better get a sword upgrade and the wall jump soon, because I’m about to lose it.
There needs to be a DLC to correct Greymoor. The enemies here are worse than any of them in the original and I’m only four hours in. Takes a thousand fricking hits to kill them and then there’s another dozen of them they give to you. And of course the boss on the other end takes off two points a hit and is relentless as all frick too.
It’s bad enough where it threatens the game as a whole. If it did not have a predecessor, 90% of the people would stop the game here, and it makes me dread a replay.

This game is far more difficult than the first game imo. Cant say if I like it or not yet more yet, but it’s a banger for sure, but I do think it’s extremely polished just as the first game was on release. The controls are extremely tight and precise.
I’m a bit further into the game than you seem to be OM

I'm a much bigger fan of the setting and narrative presentation/setup here than I was with the first game
