Check to make sure you’re on Hard. Your protego window is shorter, enemies are more aggressive, and they cast stronger spells. It’s still not what I could consider difficult, but when I’m fighting groups of enemies, I have fairly constant yellow and red flashes. And if I’m fighting a combination of ranged and melee closing enemies, like assassins, I’ll die if I try to stick to one spot and “counter”. My primary defensive mechanism is dashing around the battlefield, never staying in one spot for more than a couple of seconds. Which while, again, not hard, feels more appropriate for being a wizard.
TLDR: If you’re on Normal, switch to Hard. Still not hard, but Normal is silly for experienced gamers.

As a separate point, Unforgivable curses are flat game breaking. Which, they should be, but the devs cutting the morality system broke the game. If it existed, and there were consequences for using Unforgivable curses, it would balance things out a bit. As is? Throw a half dozen of the biggest baddies in the game at me and they will all be dead in less than 60 seconds. Large groups of smaller enemies are frankly more difficult to deal with.

The is one of the best 7/10 games I can remember playing in a long time.
I hope this game gets a sequel, and the devs are able to improve on the combat. It needs to feel more responsive, and rely less on your "spidey" sense because the game doesn't know how to handle all the spells hitting you from off screen.
Hogwarts, while beautiful, doesn't feel very alive. It feels downright barren at times. There needs to be more students walking around doing things. Likewise, going to class needs to be a bigger part of the game, aside from just a couple cutscenes that play in between finishing arbitrary assignments.
While I liked most of the side quests a lot, the activities found in the open world were all pretty boring and pointless.

I plan on playing Slytherin next time and doing the curses.

I just beat the main story.
I’ll probably wrap up side quest and then restart with my second character

RL has gotten in the way of playing lately, but I just hit 30 from focusing on side quests (haven't done 2nd trial yet). I thought I was getting close to being done with most of the open world missions/puzzles/etc and then I decided to take a trek through the mine. I hadn't really realized how big this other section is.

Very big, but very empty, unfortunately. Well, lots of the random collectibles, but there are very few quests down there. If there is any future DLC, it would be a good spot for it.

I got to level 30 before I even realized I had access to the southern part of the map.

Honestly, I think that's a bit intentional, as I don't think they want you spending much time down there.
On a mildly related note, I'll echo the advice I've been giving people: Do the main quests and relationship quests as a priority. None of the side content will disappear/fail because you advance the story too far (a la Mass Effect). If you want to increase your inventory size or your ancient magic meter (highly suggest), do those trials, but don't worry about completing everything right now. Most of your talents and spells are gated behind main and relationship quests. Knock those out, and do the side content in small doses when you feel like it. Don't let it become a slog. And without going into detail, the game actually prompts you to go wrap up side content after the main quest. Aim to reach, or get close to, level 34, as you're reaching the end of the main game. But even if you don't, you'll have all the time in the world to get there.

You get a prompt of which spell is available for which quest/relationship. I just unlocked crucio (i chose to learn it and perform it on the dude). I'm level 26 and haven't done the 2nd trial either.
I have the 28 slot inventory (2nd stage Merlin trials where you had to do 6). It went up 4 after I did the Merlins. I have to do 10 Merlins now. How many slots to you end up with? I can't see spending the time to do 10 Merlins to get 4 more slots.
Also, I just unlocked the Loom in the Room of Requirement. Is it worth looking for beasts to be able to upgrade gear until I get high level gear? The first upgrade got me 6 defense. Seems like a grind to get.
Anyway, D2 Lightfall drops today so I may take a break from Hogwarts.

While this is true, what you don’t get are prompts for quest prerequisites. Put another way, certain quests won’t trigger until you’ve completed other quests. I could go into more detail, but absent that, just trust me. Do relationship quests and main quests as a priority. Don’t worry about clearing side quests unless it’s easy to knock out on your way.

Each level unlocks another four slots.

The upgrades are 6/18/36, so they become significant later. With that said, you won’t unlock the third level until very late in the game. Just start building out your vivariums (more unlocked as the main quest progresses) and start eyeing upgrades more intently around level 30. But that’s assuming you’re progressing the main quest like I’m suggesting. If not, you’ll be stuck as is indefinitely.

My only regret on my first play through is that I didn't collect all the Demiguise before progressing further. Having Alohomora L3 would have been great so I didn't have to go back and find all the doors I missed.
Outside of that, I tried to 100% areas as I entered them for missions (merlin trials, astronomy tables, and ancient magic hot spots) I did find that some things would have overall been better had I progressed main story fast, but I liked doing side quests as they popped up, it gave me a break from the main quest grind. I feel like they also played really well into the main story that way.
Total play time to 100% was right under 80 hours. I did spend some time in my Room of Requirements building it up only for the first side room to open more after I finished the game. I really wish they would have given me that from the jump...
I've almost finished my shiny hunt on my first play through. I still haven't found a shiny Hipogriff in the wild, but when I bread the two (one from the mission with Poppy, the other was a preorder bonus) it was a shiny offspring.
Does anyone know if the "offspring" ever actually grow up? I've kept one from the beginning of being able to breed and it hasn't changed at all.

once you complete the story, can you still roam about the map? or is it finished and you have to start a new character?
Posted on 2/28/23 at 10:18 am to finchmeister08
It's free roam. Once you complete the final main story quest credits will roll and you go talk with Professor Weasly about your O.W.L.S. (It's about having your field guide to 100% complete)
After that it will give you a chance to go back and get anything you missed.

I agree, my first play through I didn't keep any items that I went on side quests for. I also didn't learn any of the unforgivables. I am about to start my second and see if keeping items and learning/using unforgivables makes any difference.

I do a main quest, then any relationship quest that unlock something. If it doesn't have an unlock, I skip. Well, thats what i've been doing for the last few levels. I was doing everything earlier. But, i'll eventually 100% it.

The issue is that relationship quests unlock in order. Each is required for the one after. So while the one in front of you might not unlock anything, the one after it might.
There are also quests that unlock unmarked things. As an example, the second broom upgrade doesn’t unlock, even if you win the second broom trial, until after the It’s All Gobledegook quest, which doesn’t say a word about gatekeeping broom upgrades.

I ran out of quests (with exception of flying and Demiguise moons), so I guess it’s time for the second trial.

There are a lot of quests available in the larger open world.
Also, there are a lot of gatekeeper quests (the trials seem to almost tier them).
