I don't get all the hate for the playlist stuff.

If you want to just slay people during an objective game, then do it.

I've been on plenty of teams in Halo 3, Reach, 4 and 5 were we had people solely focused on the objective and two or three "killers" who watched their back.

Campaign is getting rave reviews, although it’s mentioned they weren’t able to fully salvage the story after Halo 5’s blunders.

I suspect a heavy amount of the frustration with playlists is due to how much more flexibility players had in older games, and especially MCC. Go look at MCC's playlist selection for an idea of just how deep that rabbit hole goes, which is leading to confusion as to why something like that isn't implemented when they have done it in another game recently.

That said, my frustrations are aimed more at lack of BR starts.
BTB: No BR starts. Boring and extremely weird.
Quick Play: No BR starts. Now I don't expect this playlist to be 100% BR starts because that has not been the norm in the past, but maybe mix it in some would be nice.

Yes, ranked has BR starts, but it doesn't make sense for the other playlists to completely lack BR starts since that is when Halo flows much more naturally compared to what we have now.

H5 non ranked was AR start. Ranked was pistol start. This seems to be the norm. The BR is more skill reliant. A big push of this title is to draw in new gamers to the Halo world. A Quick play or BTB BR start would annoy the hell out of noobs. The first skill you learn in Halo is to spray the AR then get close enough to melee. You don't learn how to head shot final shot until much later.

I'm pretty sure H3 didn't have BR starts for unranked. They aren't worried about skilling up the new player base. They are worried about getting them to play and stick around more than 10 minutes. I played a quick play game last night with an open mic COD player. He was pissed because a pistol headshot wasn't an automatic kill. That is the type of players they are trying to keep around. If they don't, in a month it will only be MCC chads still playing and that isn't fun for anybody who isn't a diamond + player IMO. I agree completely with catering to the new player. Halo needs an influx of new players. This is the only way to do it.

You still have BR starts in ranked. The pistol isn't terrible in BTB. I can usually dominate an AR players that isn't a close range and there are usually 2-3 BR spawns each side on all the maps.

What button layout do yall use? I mapped mine to be the old school boxer layout. B is sprint. LT is melee. RB is grenade. I have always wanted to try claw but I have never done it.

Varied, but BTB did for 90% of the gametypes within it. MCC unranked had a precision slayer option altogether, and some other modes still had BR starts despite being unranked.

Again, I understand bringing in new players, but I assure you that the honeymoon phase is going to end the moment they realize that spawning with AR/Pistol vs a team that locks down the BRs and power weapons with momentum early is not a fun time. I say that as a guy who is usually one of the ones locking down the BRs early, and a good BR is going to fricking dumpster the vast majority of the players in those scenarios.

Bungie caught so much shite back in the day for non-BR starts on certain Halos because of early momentum basically turning the match into checkmate. You can't swing shite when the enemy team locks down the power weapons and grabs BRs in some early momentum and all you have to work with are subpar spawn options, whereas the BR is Halo's great equalizer. In BTB it may not be as severe due to multiple spawns, but it still does not flow well in BTB where the couple guys with BRs completely outrange most of the lobby due to BR vs pistol.
