I guess I'm getting older, because all I remember were cosmetic preorder items for RDR 2. That's obviously not what I'm talking about.
What are you talking about specifically?

Rockstar just came out and confirmed that there will be no disc for physical release. You will own nothing and be happy with it.
Yeah I absolutely hate this. I know the disc in the box is usually obsolete in a hurry thanks to huge patches and such, but having a disc allows you to at least have the license portable. A download code is a one time digital purchase and still inferior to a disc, which you can still buy and trade.
It sounds like they are going to release a disc version at some point though... at least I hope so.
The doomers are all saying this going to be the end of discs period, if GTA 6 can get away with it this might become the norm. Physical diehards are now a small enough group they can ignore us.

No physical release at all? They're throwing out every red flag possible.

I literally embedded it on the previous page. I don't care about the special mod shops or the hair salon piece, even though that's pretty wild honestly. Locking out side activities that are base level gameplay for GTA is just garbage behavior.

You are aware of single player based DLC right? This is pretty much just day one DLC

It's amazing the things people are willing to accept these days.

What's amazing is the mental gymnastics you're doing to act like this is brand new.

Yes, this is brand new for Rockstar. No mental gymnastics required.

I think people are elevating R* and CDPR as the last soldiers standing in this battle against the current gaming environment and they keep getting their hearts broken

No it’s fricking not and I’m not sure why you keep saying that it is.

Not it's not and this does not affect the main story at all. If this came out there months after release it'd just be called DLC

GTA 5 is a tough one because it initially released the day I finally put my Atari in the attic.

I don't know. A whole lot of the replies to their official announcement tweet are people pissed off about no physical disc. Or asking where the gameplay trailer is.

No one should buy this game until it is on sale, but Rockstar knows the gaming public can't help themselves

It’s also the vocal minority. The majority of people don’t care about physical discs.
In 2022, 94% of all gaming sales were digital. 72% of you are doing consoles only.
In 2023, 83% of console sales were digital.

It's wild what people are willing to accept based solely on hype. These people are the reason the gaming industry is in the state it's in.

This is coming from someone who supports physical media, but realistically, physical media for video games hasn't made any sense after like the PS3 era.
That is because you aren't getting "the game" on the disk. Often times, the disk includes only a portion of the game, and you have to download the rest. In other instances, there is almost always a day one patch that fixes performance issues, bugs, etc. Over time, new features are added, bugs are fixed, etc.
It's not like when you buy a movie or an album and you get the final version of the content.

For me to be the "contrarian" in this conversation, we'd have to accept the premise that gamers widely accept the move to games releasing with locked paywall content and no physical editions.
If that's where we are, that's a pretty recent development.
