They made 5 modern mainline GTA games in 12 years (GTA III 2001 to GTA V 2013)

It will be 13 years for them to make the next one.

More time to make a single game than it took to make 5.

And that doesn't even factor in the fact they made numerous GTA spinfoff titles, DLC's for many of them, and about 10 other games in other IP's during that time original 12 year period.

Except your whole them driving themselves into irrelevance comment or that they risk aging themselves out by delaying a game by like 6 months

Nah, this delay has no effect on my statement. It's just adding more to the numbers of the younger generation who have never given a crap about GTA.

Well that’s ridiculous then. If it takes over a decade to make one game then it’s probably time to just hang it up.

George R. R. Martin must sit on their Board of Directors.

They built this by releasing a lot of games over 13 years. They created demand by consistently giving us a stellar product. They haven't been doing that for over a decade.

Kids who were 17 or 18 when GTA 5 came out will be 30 when GTA 6 comes out. Kids who are 17 and 18 NOW do not care about GTA. You think the over-30 crowd is their target audience? I don’t.

You think dads who loved GTA games in their teens and 20s are going to be sharing GTA 6 with their kids? I don't.

GTA 6 is going to sell a lot of copies, but they gotta do something different if they want to remain an icon of gaming like they were for so long.

And the first 4 were all very close together and all amazing games.

false narrative.

they made Red Dead 2 which was a damn masterpiece and printed money off GTA5 shark cards because morons spent billions of dollars on them

Bethesda timeline is pretty similar with the Elder Scrolls games minus the shark card money lol and RDR2 >>> Fallout 4

Idk, id take some delays over rushing a broken/buggy mess at release

“Some delays”

It’s been over a decade since the last game

Also let’s be honest, would anyone here be surprised if the game still has tons of bugs upon release? But like you said this game will make a shite ton of money either way so Rockstar doesn’t care

Seriously, it's going to be hyped like no video game has ever before. When RDR2 came out there were commercials for it on TV constantly, and I can't remember the last time before that I actually saw network TV commercials for a video game. I fully expect the GTA 6 marketing campaign to be the biggest in video game history.

Whatever the first day/week/month video game sales record currently is, GTA 6 will likely shatter them all.

And I say that as someone who finds the GTA games somewhat tiresome and dare I even say overrated. They are masterful works of technical craftmanship but as video games, they can wear on you. Open world game fatigue I guess. I do remember being absolutely blown away by GTA 3 back in the day (easily one of the most influential video games of all time) and thought Vice City has one of the most fun video game worlds ever. Everything since then hasn't moved me as much. San Andreas was really good, but far too long. GTA 4 is actually pretty awful IMO, but GTA 5 was a return to form and was really good. I only play the single player campaign though, I have absolutely not interest in GTA online.

Hopefully after this long of a wait GTA6 actually brings something meaningfully new to the table in terms of gameplay. GTA games are basically the same template with just different characters and stories and increasingly more detailed/realistic worlds.

But given how GTA online is the actual money maker now, the single player campaign isn't nearly as important to them as how they can monetize the online for the next 15 years.

But worst case scenario, a typical GTA style template game will be still plenty good so of course I'll be one of the bazillion people getting it.

I just pray they don't take themselves too seriously and keep it extremely off the wall and offensive. I get the feeling they are gonna pull some punches this time around.

As far as bugs, I get the feeling there is 0% chance they release GTA 6 as a broken mess (e.g. Cyberpunk 2077). Rockstar actually has a very good track record for their 1.0 versions of games running exceptionally well. Besides, there is way too much at stake. Letting the narrative around the game and its release becoming fouled by technical problems would be an epic disaster and they know that, thus these delays.

Delay it as long as necessary.

I applaud Rockstar for not succumbing to the dollar amount of their IP alone. Make GTA great, please. We’ve waited 12 years, we can wait a couple more if that’s the cost of making it what we expect

If this delay is to backtrack on the woke turn they've been making, it'll be worth it.

I doubt that's what is happening.

If any studio gets a pass for delays, its R*. They've earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to dotting every I and crossing every T. At least with me.

Genuinely curious, what woke turn? I've always seen R* as a "F everyone" kind of company.
