I bought a gaming PC for my son but he's having some issues. He's unable to download anything because it says it's low on disk space, even though it's not. He plays Cyberpunk and he's unable to save the game. He downloaded Nexus Mods and he's having problems with the mod manager. I really don't know anything about PCs but this is it, not sure if it will be any help or not

The most likely culprit is that the hard drive has multiple partitions and Steam is assigned to a stupidly small one.

You say he’s not actually low on disk space, which makes me think you (or he) know how to check that. Post a screenshot?

Disk partition problem most likely, it's strange to come from the manufacturer this way.

Open file explorer and see if it lists multiple drives, if it does and one is small, usually the C drive then that's the problem as stated above.

The SSD on that build only has 256GB. If you factor in the OS it’s even less. How many other games has he installed on that drive? Cyberpunk alone would take up a significant portion of that drive.

To rephrase into dad language what everyone else has said, C is the SSD, which is small. There is another drive (2TB) which is bigger, which is not the default install drive. He needs to move whatever games he has, that can, onto the 2TB drive, not the SSD.

ETA: If that's my version of dad tech language, I have failed.

What if he left Cyberpunk where it is, and downloaded the others that he wants on the larger drive? Would that work?

It always asks which drive to install to. Use the 2TB for everything.

In real dadspeak. Tell em to quit trying to shove 10 pounds of shite into a 5 pound sack.

ETA. I just installed a game from steamz it also tells you on the install screen how big the game is and how much space eaxh drive has

Assuming Steam - here is a page on how to change the default as well as moving existing library:

Steam Support

There probably is some value to just uninstalling everything from the library and reinstalling on the larger drive/partition and then building up the mods from scratch in the correct place (including the mod manager).

Virtually any drive that is sub terabyte (the 256gb) should be OS and maybe temporary downloads only.

The 2 TB hard drive that is in that PC is old tech. It’s a spinning disk drive hard drive. Most modern games now don’t even support them as they are way to slow to properly play games on. Old drives like that are good for storing media like videos, photos, documents etc, but anything that requires fast performance like operating system and gaming, it needs to be an SSD.

The downside of PC gaming. Constant issues and troubleshooting. I reset my OS every 6 months or so to somewhat combat this. Pretty effective, really. Sometimes you just need a fresh plate.

This sounds like 100% user error

So you're saying I should add a larger SSD drive?

Yes. Depending on that motherboard you should be able to add another m.2 drive. Just be aware ssd prices are absurd now. 1 TB ssds used to be like $60… they’re $180 now.

What size would you recommend?

Yea, outside maybe some initial setup issues getting everything to where it is going to the opitmal place and maybe a gpu driver update issue from time to time, there shouldn't be many constant issues to troubleshoot.

There's 12 TB of external storage, 3 TB of SSDs right there, and mostly full.

All bought before the prices went crazy though.

Pretty much a fact for every PC user in the world that your system will accumulate bloat over the years (and a lot of it causes performance issues) unless you do something about it. So yeah, user error--sure.

The best answer is “the most you can afford”

I’d say 1 TB realistically is the lowest you’d want to go if it’s going to be used to play a lot of modern games like Cyberpunk. It’s not uncommon now for games to take more than 100gb of storage. And if you are following proper SSD hygiene, you want to leave 20% of the drive free.

Except that, if you read the thread, “bloat” isn’t the issue. They have significant available drive space they aren’t using due to user error. Or are you interpreting OP’s problem differently than I am?

Issues that I've had in the last few months:
-Bought an Obsbot Tiny 3 for my son, which come to find out half of the features are not compatible with any AMD GPUs (Last week's update actually fixed this)
-Randomly like once a week it takes my PC like 10 minutes to boot (still haven't figured this one out)
-AMD Adrenaline doing some weird shite where I get stuck in an update failed loop and have to do a hard reset and reinstall to factory settings

Y'all like using the emote huh
