GameStop shares surge on multiyear partnership with Microsoft to create 'ultimate gaming destination'

Seems like a smart move on both of their parts. Wouldn't be surprised if MS buys GameStop outright at some point.

I gotta assume these places will still sell Nintendo and Sony suff, but you gotta figure GameStop's will soon just look like XBox stores.

This almost feels like Netflix buying Blockbuster.

If Gamestop would make it worth my while to purchase and trade physical media I would be glad to shop there more often. I still buy discs on occasion but more often than not over the last few years the prices and sales on the MS or PS store have beat GS and the trade in values are still shitty.

But why

GameStop is doing it because they desperately need a stable financial partner. The company has actually been seeking a buyer for years to no avail, that's why this might be a first step towards MS aquiring them.

Microsoft is doing it because they have the money to blow. If it turns out to be a success great, if it doesn't, no big deal for them. They are doing the most aggressive push into gaming they ever have from a financial standpoint the past couple of years.

Nail on the head. The last time I went to a GS the prices on used games were a joke. Why go to the store to get $7.54 of credit on five games and then turn around and buy a used game for $39.99 when it's the same price on the virtual stores?

Because they have a ton of overhead and have to have great margins

MSFT seems to be on a tear with doing something in the gaming world

- Advance the digital realm
- Acquire any game studio they can
- Merge the PC and console worlds
- Launched the most packed subscription service
- Launch a potential huge streaming service
- Partner with largest brick-n-morter retail seller
- Partner with Nintendo upcoming

Meanwhile back at Sony

- We got a FTL SSD

I kid with you Sony people, but they really need to do something besides muh exclusives.

They don't have near the infrastructure that MS has, so we couldn't expect sony to compete

Honesty, if Sony doesn't do something big over the next 5 years, they will go the way of Sega with how MS is aggressively going after market share.

Sony did everything right the past generation but is still at a massive disadvantage simply because they don't have the money MS does. It's why companies get dangerous when they grow as big as MS or Google or Amazon, etc.

They can simply outspend their competition to death. Even big companies like Sony can't outlast infinite billions.

Gamestop was stupid. They should have pivoted YEARS ago to more of an online/digital sales model. They could have been a leader in the space and much better off than they are now.

I understand why GS has to do it, but I'm asking why I'd go there and receive/pay that when I can typically get the a game at the same price or less on the virtual stores. The used market isn't what it used to be.

Xbox fans want Sony to fail so bad it’s hilarious at this point. I don’t blame them though, it must be hard getting bent over every generation.

XBox Fan here.

I don't want Sony, Nintendo, or anyone in the gaming industry to fail. The competition is great for all of us.

The more competition the better.

Too many people NEED their side to "win" to make themselves feel better about their choices.

I want Playstation to fail. Sony's nonsense with paying companies for third-party game exclusives is outrageous and needs to be put to an end. What they're doing is bad for all gamers. It's why I refuse to purchase one.
