The FromSoft 2009-2022 run is sick and has made Sekiro/Bloodborne/Elden Ring shuffle up the spots in my top 10 all time games where the top 5 has been dominated by old 90s Squaresoft titles. (FF6-7, Chrono Trigger)

Just look at this run (and the timeframe)

2009 - Demon's Souls
2011 - Dark Souls
2014 - Dark Souls II
2015 - Bloodborne
2016 - Dark Souls III
2019 - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
2022 - Elden Ring

All that in 13 years

Is there any developer close to that output, especially considering quality? There's at least 2 GOTY in there and tbh should be 3 by the end of it.

The quality is what gets me. Consistent quality. I feel like each area of all those games is created with love…and hate.

And oozing with pure darkness, which in a weird way is very satisfying and freeing.

I've never played any of those.

I know I'm missing out in the gaming world, just I just can't get into some genres at times.

They require a certain... mindset to play.

I know the popular thing to say about FROM games is that they are brutally hard or unforgiving, but honestly they just require the player to stop caring about the "small" things (this includes exp, in-game currency, etc.) and just play the game.

Between all of the games I've have racked up hundreds upon hundreds of deaths, lost hundreds of thousands of exp points and missed out on big ticket items in one death in games like Sekiro that you lose the money. You just have to forget about it and move on BECAUSE:

nothing in gaming has ever been more rewarding than these types of moments:

I've just been playing metal slug 1-3 on my Neo Geo AES for the past month, going for high scores.

Before that I was on Fallen order and arkam knight lol

I want to start the mass effect trilogy, but can't find the time recently to get into an intriguing story.

I get what you mean. I was originally going to give it a try on PC, but the port was so bad - it took no consideration if you were playing on a keyboard in the tutorial. By the time I was playing games with my controller on PC, I had no real desire to come back.

Also, the idea of playing a single player game that others can jump into just to frick with you isn't terribly appealing to me.

Nintendo was the only one that came to mind. Not quite the release pace but it's hard to find developers that don't release games that need 10 major patches to fix gameplay.

If Bethesda could have avoided some of their mishaps within the Fallout 3/4 universe, they almost could have rivaled this with their release of Skyrim over and over.

In terms of gameplay and worldbuilding, they are definitely the most consistent throughout that span. The story on the other hand... leaves a lot to be desired, but then again, I don't play FromSoft games for the story.

Two things.I love Elden Ring it is a first class AAA title with all of FromSoft magic and more. But it is basically dark souls 4 if we are honest. Bb will always be the magnum opus.

Yea, I get your point but still way more depth than most games out in that short span.

If it's not your genre, fair enough. I don't play sports games anymore either.

Bloodborne still the best, Elden Ring is great but lacks the insane focus of BB

Certainly, if you like Souls games. Most people don’t.

I like Dark Souls 3 the best. I think they really perfected the whole formula with that one. I liked Bloodborne but all the dodging got old and repetitive.

Still making up my mind about Elden Ring. I'm only at level 50 or so.

You truly hold the believe most people flat out don’t like the souls game’s? I could buy your take on Sekiro that game is fricking hard, story is there but it’s dumb as hell compared to their rest and not nearly as many built in east mode makers. But are you actually suggesting most people don’t like Dark Souls 3, BB, and Elden Ring?

Elden ring is by far the most casual or “Normy” game the company has ever come close to making. They have never made it SO EASY to just destroy something using 100 different ways. There are so many I am almost positive it’s a troll and the journal figs who lie about accessibility and hate keeping in gaming every time FromSoft is gearing up a release. Clearly nothing off base there.

wait, what?
Sekiro is probably the only FromSoft game I've played that actually had a coherent narrative that wasn't bogged down in unnecessary obscurity.

Edit: As for the thread, this really depends on your perspective of the Souls series. For me, they're overrated. Not cause they're hard, but because the storytelling virtually does not exist and the gameplay is too shallow for my taste. I know those are not popular opinions, but that's my experience. I still think the series is good, but not to the degree it often is made out to be.
