I just did all the side quests, outside the Corneo stash side quest, and I got a lot of good stuff from it. It helped me level up my weapons a lot. I think they’re worth doing.

I stand by the fact this game delivers.
The main issue people have is the time travel aspect and I love it, makes sense for a remake and fits right in line with why they did it.
This game is like no other she you aren't going to get anything close to it the 2020 state of video games
Kudos to square for taking a huge risk on a sure thing, that took balls

And? I think we all know that.

there are wayyyy more issues than that

This game succeeds in nearly all of the non-gameplay aspects and fails at almost all of the gameplay ones
Positives
Art design - Outstanding
Models and voice acting - Phenomenal
Localization - On point
Music - Fantastic
Negatives
Length - Twice as long as it should've been
Pacing - Trash
Level design - Trash. Too much repetition, too much backtracking, and too many dated mechanics. Robot arms, train cars, hold square to shoot through this debris 20 times
Quest design - Trash. the sidequests are like something you'd find in an MMO. "Go find 5 kittens around town." "Go find 5 kids around town." "Go find these chocobos to open a fast travel system that you will probably use for an hour lol" This is 2020, gotta do better than that.
Exploration? Unrewarding. Town chapters weren't very engaging, and it was super depressing to find well-hidden chests at endgame only for them to give you shite like Hi-potions and an ether
Technical quality/Optimization - Trash
Writing - Lol dont get me started. Fake-out deaths, Kingdom Hearts bullshite, the works. The characters go from "we need to to find another away across this 3ft gap in the sewer" to jumping around on flying debris, Cloud slicing through buildings, Tifa kicking through chunks of the interstate, all kinds of anime bullshite.
As fun as the combat system was early on, it really started to show its arse towards the end. If you walk into a boss with the wrong materia junctioned to Elemental (i.e. something the boss resists or absorbs), you have to either reload your checkpoint and redo materia, or subject yourself to a miserably long fight.
Even with all that, the positives still made me give it a 3/5. I just can't help but be depressed abut what a missed opportunity this was. I was saying GOTY, can't wait to get the Platinum, all kinds of shite earlier in this thread LOL. I'm not gonna bother though, game just isn't good enough or fun enough to deserve my time. I replayed a few chapters on Hard and immediately got sick of the forced walking, squeezing through gaps, constantly skipping cutscenes, etc. The game design just doesn't lend itself to fun or productive replays. When I looked through Chapter Select, there were really only 4-5 chapters I was actually excited to play again.
This game should've been a tight, focused 15-20hr experience with meaningful side content and deeper exploration of Midgar. Instead of an experience thats a mile wide and an inch deep, give us something a littler smaller in scope with deeper exploration and engagement. Give me more stuff like the Sector 7 Shinra Housing area, Wall Market, Shinra HQ with the tour and that awesome virtual theater, etc. These smaller moments are where this game really shined for me.
Seems like a lot of people on Reddit and Gamefaqs had the same experience as me, where they think its the best game ever early on, and then "I can't wait for it to end" soon after. I can't believe I wrote this much, just shows how disappointed I am. Total missed opportunity.
Mystery was right.

I disagree with pretty much everything you said but I don't have time to type out way
But I'm a fan of XIII and XV, to me this was a great way to do it bc you can't have Midgar in a full game setting plus the open world, bc that is a full game in itself. Those side quests you talked about aren't even mandatory and are just there to give people that wanted more, just that filler so I get that aspect.
I appreciate your write up and opinion but this game hit all the marks for me and I'm just glad I don't over think things and can just enjoy them for why they are, which let me enjoy things that most ppl tend to tear apart because they think they know better than the actual devs/writers.
Was it perfect? No. But it's the best thing square has put out in a while and you aren't getting anything like that in today's gaming and that means something.
88 on metacritic is just right IMO
2.5 out of 5 I just don't see it, sorry but to each his own

and yeah, I'm sure your ability to enjoy it is because of those things and not because you're the biggest FF homer on the internet

Square's best effort on their "best" title and all they can do is produce a mediocre, dated game. Sad. The reviews are higher than they should be because this is probably the most nostalgia-inducing property of all time.
I'm anxious to see what the others in here say once they finish it.

Let me ask this. Will my opinion be influenced from never having played the original? I’ll probably wrap it up this week.
Posted on 4/19/20 at 9:51 pm to Carson123987
I disagree totally.
They took a huge gamble by doing this and could have royally fricked it up and tarnished the series entirely.
They took an huge risk and it paid off, I get it, you don't like Nomura. I just happen to think he's the MVP of Square
It's fine

Couldn’t agree more about the anime comparison. Thought this to myself as well. The writing and set pieces are legit laughable in chapter 17-18.

Don't think so. Even if I had never played the original, I still would've laughed at the sophomoric writing of the last 2 chapters
I do suggest playing the original though, it's amazing. I didn't play it until my 20s and still thought it aged really well. You can get it for like $10 on PSN

I assume it's not too late, or not quite time yet, to get these?
TIA.
FTR, absolutely loving this game. Behemoth Thpe-O fight was exasperating. Trying to go in as blind as I can but I couldn't stand not being able to find Corneo's final stash, so I had to read up on it- would have completely missed that damn switch if not for reading.
Was not expecting 'stop' magic from tonberry. Waltzed around kicking it's arse like "hell yeah" and next thing I know I'm running like hell with Barrett building up ATB so I can Phoenix down Cloud and Tifa. That fight was the first time so far I've had to Phoenix down even once, yet alone multiple times.

If somebody wants to play the original. I would recommend to mod it. Reunion will fix the bad localization and some of the bad bugs like spirit. The localization was really really bad for 7 even for 90s game standards.

Got some good time in over the weekend.
Just defeated Hell House. First try was just testing the waters. Realized I was going to need to dodge a bit more the second go around EZPZ.
I finally have some complaint's which im sure some are excited to see for whatever reason:
-The NPC chit chat needs to be toned down a bit.
-Not the biggest fan of assess as a way to get new materia when you already struggle to find room because...you have to have assess in a slot.
-The way Summons have been obtained is lackluster. I like that you can fight them..but would almost rather a dungeon or quest to obtain them.
-I havent really spotted many spots to grind yet. Maybe I have just missed or havent gone back to certain places but id like a little spot to grind. Mostly for materia purposes. (Any recommendations?)
-I Don't have a problem with the linearity..but just throw a few more mobs out along the way. Combat is fun..give me more of it. I dont return after completing quest in hopes to stumble upon more on the way back..sometimes it happens..but feels like most time it doesn't.
ETA: Also give me a better notification for when I obtain an item. Its hard to see or easy to miss sometimes with the way its set up.
Thats is really it at this point. None of this is major. I still think the game is worthy of the 8/9 range its been sitting at.(To this Point)

I turned subtitles off completely. Way less distracting.

Not sure. You could always grind the arena over and over, if getting Bahamut is a goal of yours. Otherwise later in the game you get a double AP materia and you get double AP in new game plus.

Thats where I am at currently. Should do the trick if that is all they really give me. Just need something. Some sort of grind.

It's really not necessary to grind at all
Posted on 4/20/20 at 1:56 pm to MF Doom
I figured based on the lay out and pacing. The grind is mostly just me wanting to milk a few extra hours out of the game.

Just finished with the Honeybee inn.
Amazing.
Fabulous.
That was unexpectedly fun.
