I feel starved for mana slots, so I actually didn't have a character equipped with lightning materia. I think what you mentioned combined with the giant near-instant kill (1,000 damage) towards the end of the fight made the boss the first fight that I just didn't like in the game.

Yea, you need that. I always keep the 4 main spells up, they are pretty OP. Just use the minor version to conserve MP and keep cast time up.
Fire > Humans
Ice > Monsters
Thunder > Mechs
Aero > Flying
There are more frustrating fights later. Anytime there are too many enemies in one area and you get interrupted after interrupted it can be a pain. The worst mechanic in the combat IMO. But most of the fights have a clear way to exploit the boss. If you can figure it out, it is much easier. Assess is your best friend.

I didn’t realize that was consistent throughout until now lol.
I also don’t have enough slots though unfortunately. I have three in my sword and one in my accessory or whatever and I’m running assess, so I have had to keep switching

Don't forget breach to remove reflect, barrier and manawall (formerly shell)

It isn't 100% of the time. There are some unique monsters that are weak against fire or some humans who are not weak against it. But 90% of the time it is.

Probably useful. But I didn’t use those at all. Had no problem beating everything including arenas and vr fights.

You can be as critical as you want with what was presented to you. I understand people have different taste and that’s great. You can be critical of chapter 18. I’m just saying I’m not going to be until the story unfolds and I start to fully see the direction they are taking it.

I have been talking about the game until chapter 18. Chapter 18 is ludicrous. It's not about what I think comes next.
