Does Mario add anything of value to Super Mario Bros 2?

I don’t think I’ve ever played through the game with him. It’s Luigi or Toad always depending on the level.

No.
Toad is fastest, running and picking up objects, but worst jump
Luigi has highest jump and Princess can hover, but they're slow
Mario is balanced

I'm weird as shite because it's my second favorite Mario game.
I play as Toad and Mario.

It's better than the Lost Levels. It's a great game. And we had no idea that existed. It's 100% canon. Shy guys and Birdos are still around in the Mario Universe. It introduced that Luigi jumps differently than Mario which has been canon ever since

I can't imagine playing not as Princess - hover is OP. Mario is playable bc it's straightforward.
Luigi seemed uncontrollable as a kid when I played it

SPOILERS
It was all a dream. Revealed after you beat it.
In Mario 3, a curtain over a stage opens at the beginning and closes when you beat it. Everything in the game is made to look like a prop with visible bolts, even the bushes. To drive it home further there's even a secret where Mario can walk behind the flat fake stage scenery.
So the theory goes only Mario 1 happened. Mario 2 was his fever dream that night which is why it's so whacked out from the rest of the series. And Mario 3 is the dramatic re-enactment of Mario 1 he starred in himself.

I don't think I've played with a character other than Peach.

I remember finding out about this secret when I was reading a tips and tricks magazine at a Books a Million store. Blew my mind at age 7 about getting the whistle using this trick.

Second game I ever got after the karate kid. It’s a fantastic game and pretty damn hard. Also my second favorite after 3 which I feel is the greatest game of all time.
I only played as Luigi and princess as a kid. Game feels completely different and much harder as Mario/toad.

One of the few games I have played enough to speedrun.
For casual gameplay, Peach is the best character.
For a speedrun, Toad is the go to for like 95% of the game. Luigi is used for a couple of level skips.
I have never completed a run entirely with Mario.

Peach is easy mode. That's why it's a girl. It was the 80s. They knew what they were doing.
also it's weird to call her Peach in this game to me. We always called her "Princess", I was thinking I never heard the name Peach at all until she says it out loud in the letter at the beginning of Mario 64. I looked it up and damn it I was pretty much right
Yoshi's Safari was a Super Scope game.

In Japan, Peach's name has always been Princess Peach (????, Pichi-Hime, Princess Peach) since her debut in the original Super Mario Bros. in 1985, but she was localized as "Princess Toadstool" in the English-language manual. The English version of Yoshi's Safari, released in 1993, contained the first usage of the name "Peach" in the Western world, though she was called Princess Toadstool in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, released in 1994. In Super Mario 64, released in 1996, she uses both names in a letter addressed to Mario, signing it "Peach". From the 1996 game Mario Kart 64 onward, the name Peach is used in Western versions.
Yoshi's Safari was a Super Scope game.
