Devil May Cry 5 Thread
Devil May Cry 5 releases in about a week from now, on 3/8/19.

It's the first 'proper' Devil May Cry game in 11 years.

Since the series has been on hiatus for sometime, for those unaware it's one of the great grandfathers of the fast paced hack'n slash action genre. Known primarily for its fast paced, stylish combat and overall high difficulty.

The series has an extremely weird history, for anybody who cares to research it. From its origins as an early Resident Evil 4 prototype, to it's mind bogglingly awful first sequel, and lastly to the non-Capcom 'reboot' attempt that enraged the fans, it's really been all over the place but now thankfully seems to be back on track.

The short version of the story and world is that the main series protagonist, Dante, is a half demon/half human mercenary who specializes in hunting down demons. Despite being part demon he actually fights for the human world against demons.

Thousands of years ago his father, Sparda, was a high ranking demon warrior who fell in love with a human woman and then rebelled against his fellow demons and fought for humanity's sake, defeating the leader of the demon world Mundus. He and his woman had twin sons, Virgil and Dante. Virgil and Dante have a complicated frenemies relationship.

The demon world was only sealed away though and still fights to get lose and they obviously hate Sparda and his descendant's guts. The other character worth mentioning is Nero, introduced in DMC4. He's Virgil's son and therefore Dante's nephew.

The games are EXTREMELY Japanese in story and style, which is of course either a good or bad thing depending on your tastes.

Yes, this is the first time in years I can remember having to games that I'm super pumped about coming out right at the same time. Thankfully the two weeks between them should be ample time to enjoy them both.

I don't remember 4 being that much shorter than the other ones, both 1 and 3 are pretty short games too. I recently replayed them both.

Most of time spent in those games is trying out harder difficulties and trying to get better rankings in the missions.

I do remember a lot of people being disappointed with 4 that you only play as Dante maybe the last 25% of the game.

4 was fine but def. slightly underwhelming compared to how great 3 was. Regardless, that was so dang long ago it probably isn't relevant to the development of 5.

I hope if they've gone to all this trouble to resurrect the franchise they will do it right.

he's referring to the structure. Dante's half was basically a copy/paste of Nero's half, just in reverse. terrible

it was a fine game overall, i replayed it like a dozen times. huge letdown though after the greatness that was 3

Ah yes I get it now, Dante's missions were just backtracking through already familiar areas, I can see why the reuse of areas could lead to that criticism.

Bayonetta 2 is the gold standard right now, I really hope DMC can take the trophy back.

I'm not holding my breath on that, but if it's at least good I'll be happy.

P.S: I actually loved the gameplay of dmc... and found the game to be overall enjoyable. I am glad we are going back to the old Dante though

re: Devil May Cry 5 Thread
Some key things you left out.

Trish (the blonde woman) is a demon with lightning powers who was created by Mundus to lure Dante into a trap. She was specifically designed to look like Dante's mother. She eventually rebels against Mundus and becomes Dante's partner.

Dante only eats pizza and strawberry sundaes.

Lady (Mary - the brunette) is the daughter of the cult leader who attempted to take the power of Sparda for himself in DMC3. Virgil and Dante both stopped him before fighting each other again.

Sparda (the twins' father), gave each of his sons a special blade. Dante's big sword is called Rebellion, Virgil's katana is called Yamato.

Nero (the kid missing an arm) is Virgil's son. His right arm contained Yamato and was demonic in nature before it was taken.

Nico (tatted brunette chick) is the granddaughter of Nell Goldstein, the creator of Dante's firearms.

No one knows who V (dude with the shadow monsters) is.

When the originals collection gets a sale I'll have to pick it up. I only played DMC and Bayonetta.

The new (final) trailer hints at why Dante went by the name "Tony Redgrave" after his mother died.

Heading out to Gamestop to pick it up in just a bit. They sell new releases at close the day before official launch day.

Yes I still get in my car and drive to a store to get video games, the way our good Lord intended. Also because I like them on my shelf and also because I'm a hopelessly out of touch old man set in my ways.

re: Devil May Cry 5 Thread
Through the first seven missions, quick thoughts so far:

1. Game does not really feel very Devil May Cry imo. Everything is extremely 'modern': the menus and music, the loading screens, the setting, the UI, etc. There's absolutely nothing gothic or any attempt to be legitimately evil or foreboding. It's damn near sci fi. It's very comic booky. Every new monster or boss even gets their own comic book style text overlay. Not a fan of the style really. It's not bad, just not dmc.

2. Game is quite easy so far, much easier than a Devil May Cry should be. There's only easy/normal difficulties available at first but normal is cake. I'm sure the higher level difficulties will be better. I guess in this day and age you can't make your normal mode too difficult, but they really should have made it do you can pick hard right away.

3. Part of what makes it easier is most of the fights are in wider, open area. In most dmc games the places you fought were rather compact so the enemies were always on you. It's fairly easy to get space from enemies should you need it.

4. No real variety in the levels thus far, hopefully that changes, still only 1/3rd in.

5. The 'starring' multiplayer stuff is completely worthless and pointless.

6. The way they did mission rankinngs has been streamlined and it's kinda confusing interpretting your result until you understand what's going on. The style score you see periodically is your current score, not what you just scored for that fight. In the final screen on details it shows what your score was at each checkpoint. I was trying to reconcile all the individual #s until I figured out it was essentially just 1 running total going up/down.

Game is ok but I'm a tad underwhelmed thus far. Hopefully it picks up. I still dont get why they just didn't take what they did in DMC3 and use that as their base template.

I found Devil May Cry 4 incredibly frustrating as opposed to 1 which was pretty easy.
