some DkS1 discussion in the Elden Ring thread so I figured we could start a new thread.

That thread got my juices flowing for another DkS1 playthrough (have only completed one full playthrough on this game).

Got through the tutorial and ran around firelink collecting some items before going into Undead Burg and wrecking shite in quick fashion. I think I made it through Taurus demon dying maybe 3-5 times but they were all just me being careless. It felt much easier than I remember it being my first time in that initial area.

Fextralife suggests starting with New Londo Ruins, Valley of the Drakes, and Blighttown for advanced players, which is mind boggling to me. But it has me curious enough to maybe head to New Londo next and give it a shot.

Man….such a great game though and I’m afraid I might have officially been sucked into it full speed ahead

One of my favorite youtubers is fond of saying that Undead Burg is a perfect tutorial area. The first time you play it, it will take you three hours. The second time, it will take you five minutes

Without reading, I don't think they're telling you to actually *do* New Londo. I do frequently dip down there to grab the firekeeper soul by the first ghost (make sure you've used your souls; it will almost certainly be a suicide run if you're not used to doing it), and then depending on my build, take an immediate right after coming down on the elevator to then go up another elevator to Drakes, but don't actually do that stupid area unless you really want the RTSR. You just cross the bridge which brings you to the "exit" of Blighttown.

It's a bit of light sequence breaking that you can do with the Master Key.

As for what sequence you *should* use, that depends on your build. What are you playing/using?

here's a link to the Game Progress Route page I was looking at. Seems crazy and not sure it's something I want to try. It doesn't really go into any detail about running through to grab stuff. It seems to suggest doing the areas in their entirety before moving on to the next.

first time I played the game I went full on strength. This time I'm doing more of a quality build and started with the Warrior. I want to eventually get to where I can do SOME spells but I don't enjoy that part of these games enough to base my entire build around it (standing back and firing off Sould Arrows nonstop at the start of the game isn't all that fun to me.

Who is it?

FightinCowboy is my go to video game streamer at this point. He really goes into detail with all of the FromSoft games, but he'll offer content that explores the game (lets play) and the more detailed 100% completion type walkthroughs. He really got me through my initial soulslike experience (Demon's Souls Remake)

I played my first run last summer and am furious with myself. I beat the final boss before the DLC…

Now I’m at the DLC in NG+1 and just cannot beat it. I’ve beaten every Souls boss outside of this DLC :(

Never tried DLC for DS1 but got my cheeks clapped in violent fashion at the start of DS2 and DS3 DLCs and quit both before making it to the first boss fights in each. Maybe I'll run through all 3 games this year and attempt to complete ALL DLC content.

You can relive my adventure doing just that in the weekend gaming thread. It was a hell of a ride

you cant open the seal to the four kings right away anyways, that guide is suggesting you grab something from the area and use the master key to get into blighttown from the back.

lot of good loot in blighttown, like Power Within and Iaito. (Katana)

I’ve played multiple runs over the years.

I wish I could bottle up the experience of that first run and sell it. Truly one of my best gaming memories.

While true, you can technically kill Ingward to get the key, drain the area, and then get the very large ember and a few chunks super early. I never do it, but there is a theoretical point to it even if you can’t access the four kings at that point.

Fextra has its uses, but there’s a reason using it is considered a last resort in the community

Do you have a weapon in mind? I usually go claymore on a quality build (I’m a sucker for weapons I can get early and keep all game). Anyway, my “normal” route, to the best of my memory while I’m sitting in court:

Asylum > loot the graveyard for souls > undead burg (kill the knight to get the BTSR and chunk) > (just before Taurus, break box and kill crystal lizard to get a titanite drop) kill Taurus > kick down bridge ladder > grab claymore > start of undead parish (kill knight in tower to get second chunk, go up the stairs to the right and rush the gate to save having to go through the basement, make sure to open the gate back up and grab the key) > Andre > kill big knight and grab keeper soul, unlock fire link elevator > back to Andre to upgrade weapon to +5 (buy all the shards you need, buy the weapon upgrade kit) > gargoyles and bell > kick Lautrec off the ledge in fire link > back to Andre to Darkroot Garden to grab elite knight set (I like the legs for Capra) and kill Moonlight Butterfly, bone back > New Londor fire keeper soul > +2 estus with fire link fire keeper > down to New Londo and back up Drakes (need master key) to go the back way to blight town, grab the third fire keeper soul on the way down (you’ll probably die, so use souls first) > get to the bottom and sit, then go grab the two large shards in the area, upgrade weapon at fire > Qualag and bell > chaos daughter fire, demon ruins fire, jump cheese Ceaseless > back to fire link, grab the souls and fire rest shield from the undead dragon on the way up, Havel > Capra > dip into the Depths to grab the large ember, sometimes grab the large shard by the Channeler, depending on what I got from the first crystal lizard > return to Asylum for Stray (slab) and doll > Sen’s (six large shards, two chunk giant drops) > Anor Londo

I’ll stop there, as that should take you a bit. But for context, I can knock that out, start to finish, in a touch over three hours. Straight muscle memory at this point

Eta: Being you want some magic at some point, don’t forget to grab your two vendors in lower undead burg and the depths.

Tried to play this twice. First was 2015 only a couple years after it came out and I had no idea what I was getting into. Never made it past undead burg. The 2nd was a few years ago with a bit better understanding of what I was getting into but never made it past the Capra Demon. I want to get the same incredible feeling of accomplishment everyone else gets when they play these games but I suck :(

We're happy to help you through it. Dark Souls, particularly Dark Souls 1, is about being careful and staying calm. Panic and gravity are responsible for probably 90% of all DkS1 deaths. I am not, at all, any kind of elite gamer. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bad, and I've been gaming a long time, but I'm (relatively speaking) old and don't game competitively. I just frick around with single player games to have fun.

And I can knock out the entire game, from Asylum to credits, killing every main game and DLC boss, including optional ones, in a touch over 7 hours, comfortably. It's just a matter of knowledge of the game and its mechanics and staying focused. I promise we can get you through it if you really want to

Just buy the buckler shield and learn to parry. It'll take just a bit but DS1 is ridiculously easy to parry in and the buckler has a slightly bigger timing window for forgiveness. Once you get the rhythm of it, you'll be criticaling enemies in no time and slaughtering them left and right.
