Depending on what you have and what you're going to, you may want/need to change out the RAM. If the PC isn't that old, everything else should work. Other items may still bottleneck performance.

Also Windows usually associates their license with the Motherboard, so changing that out will require a new windows license (assuming your running a paid version).

Im thinking of upgrading from my I7 7700 to a I9 7900 which I think may require me to upgrade my motherboard but im not sure I have an Asus Hero 9 with 32 gigs of ram.

You're better off upgrading to an 8700k if you're going to upgrade

This takes one YouTube video to learn and 20 minutes to change.

Don’t take it anywhere for this.

I just got on their support chat and said I was upgrading. They unlocked it for me.

I'd go i7 8700k. I think i9 is more for multi core stuff anyway.

For gaming it's likely a downgrade

You can do the same with the i7. Have the money go that route

I'm wondering what gpu he has. He needs to get a new motherboard anyway if he goes 8th Gen. If cost isn't really the issue I'd go 8700k and get a new motherboard. However if the GPU is fairly old, I'd look into putting some money into that and get a cheaper unlocked i5.

He was going to buy an 7900x. I don't think money is a problem

You right. If spending about the same, I'd shoot for a i5 8600k + Mobo + 1080 ti.

The i9 + Mobo was 1200. i5 + Mobo + 1080 ti Is 1200. However, if willing to spend 150 more, F it and buy the 8700k.
