PS4 Mod Update After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.

Like you, we are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available.

Probably because their hardware couldn't handle it.

This is a Bethesda pride vs Sony pride issue. Bethesda wants mod support to be just like it is on PC. Sony wants mods that cause problems/crashes to not be available. Kinda odd to see stubbornness block something like this so late into the deal.

The problems reported before this announcement ( link):

quote:

"KNOWN ISSUES WITH PS4 MODS
PC textures are used. Memory and performance issues may occur. We are working with Sony on optimal texture exporting support in a future update.
Sound files are currently not supported. PS4 sound format is a proprietary format. We are working with Sony on sound file processing support in a future update.
PS4 Mod Storage limit is approximately 900 MB at present. Please do not upload mods larger than 900 MB. We are working with Sony to increase this limit."

Regardless of why, mods are available on one console and not the other.

I think it's silly that Sony is blocking it entirely, because while I understand the desire for some minimum standard/bar, it's still a mod. You put the burden on the end user for partaking in it, and if the memory leaks and crashes the console, too bad.

I agree. Bethesda shouldn't have promised it either but right now Sony needs some good press and aren't getting it.

Sony just doesn't give a frick because they are selling consoles by the truck load. Last gen, Sony was far and away the the benevolent console manufacturer because they were getting killed by Microsoft for the first 3 years of the PS3's lifespan

Microsoft will behave the exact same way if Scorpio overtakes the PS4.

Sounds like they are still worried about getting hacked via game mod and shutting them down for months again.

giving the middle finger to customers seems like a good business plan

Microsoft did do that. Console history consists of people taking the lead then getting arrogant and falling behind. It's only a matter of time.
