Great topic.
I waffle between Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI having the best world. CT because it's really the perfect archetype of time travel, where each era is so foreign and yet so familiar. And FFVI just because of that midgame event that completely alters the landscape.
Honorable mention to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for that... twist. So to speak. And Shadowrun. And Most Spider-Man games. Diablo. ActRaiser. Halo. Mass Effect. And a ton others. Even old shite like Hugo's House of Horrors, or Treasure Mountain.
Most disappointing? Honestly can't come up with any after sitting here for 10 minutes thinking about it. I can think of a ton of games with shitty stories, shitty gameplay, shitty graphics, etc but I feel like creating an authentic game world is the one thing that almost every video game nails. Even garbage games like Superman 64 have interesting world features.

Certainly not the worst, but I could see disappointing considering how linear it is compared to how amazingly interconnected DkS1 was.

Yeah that's more why I had it there. The lack of Miyazaki is definitely apparent. I find DS1, DS3, Sekiro, Bloodborne and Elden Ring to have vastly superior level and world design

DkS1 definitely has its flaws, but the design of the world layout of the first 2/3 of the game is straight fricking art.

while i love these games, just from the perspective of the "world" provided id say they were good but not spectacular.

Final Fantasy 15
other side of the coin. disappointing game but the world itself was well done.
another id like to add to best world category would be kotor considering its breadth and the touch of each race having its own language in game. that could be some nostalgia tinted glasses on my part though.

Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI
Totally forgot about these old school games. I've played both so many times. FF6's setting was so amazing, and yeah the midgame event and the despair that followed was incredibly well done.

Best - Witcher 3
Worst - No Man's Sky
But I played vanilla NMS and never went back after all the updates. Maybe it's better now, but an entire galaxy was offered and it all sucked.

Best:
OoT
FFX
FF8
Twilight Princess
Wind Waker
Days Gone
HZD
Bloodborne
Elden Ring
GoW
Skyrim
Witcher 3
Worst:
BoTW. Lack of quality temples built into that world and replaced by 100 stupid non atmospheric shrines is one of the most disappointing gaming decisions imo. Should have just been OoT on steroids and it wasn’t. Still boggles my mind.

Witcher 3. Why can’t we have a Game of Thrones game in that type of world?

Another honorable mention for best:
Kingdom Hearts. Especially 1. The way they merged Disney and Final Fantasy was great. Each planet was very well designed too. I'd say the biggest knock is how the controls are clunky. Though I still kind of prefer it to the button mash fest of KH2. Also the story started going off the rails.

In regards to ME, I think that depends on how we define the term. If it's the playable space, then yeah, I can see that, outside of the ME1 Citadel, which is one of gaming's great spaces. But if we include the larger universe including the lore, etc, then I would argue it's among the best ever.

I remember getting Mafia 3 day one because of it being set in 1968 New Orleans and being extremely disappointed.
I remember being disappointed at how many bridges crossing the Mississippi we DON’T have in real life.

Best: World of WarCraft, Skyrim.

Starfield is a tough add for me. I'm enjoying it, but it's not as good as Skyrim. Starfield could easily, easily end up as the goat mod game though.

If you think back to early Fallout and early Elder Scrolls, considering this is their very first iteration the possibility is enormous. It's still an amazing game, just wasn't quite able to capture the Skyrim magic. Imagine Starfield 2.

well if there is one i hope they learned a lot about having too much with not enough in it.
they have more important things to address outside of the world and design though.

That seems like giving them way more leeway than they deserve. Ignoring Daggerfall (I'll come back to that in a sec), early Fallout and ES games are lauded for their worlds. And Daggerfall, which gets panned a bit, mostly gets panned for... large, empty, procedurally generated stretches of landscape. I'm disinclined to give them a pass on a lesson they learned three decades ago.

It has been almost completely retooled, but with that aside, the lady doth protest too much, methinks. While the game world didn’t live up to the hype, the hype was “by far the greatest, most immersive game world in history”. Doesn’t make it a bad game world. Even at release, I think one would start to comically strain credulity getting past 20 or so games with better game worlds, much less 50.
I played about an hour of it before uninstalling, i believe this was after the next gen patches came out as well. First thing i did in the open world(after it finally let me out) was jump on the roof of a car with my gun out.
It proceeded to drive me around for infinity, as i'm standing on the roof, with a weapon. That is pretty poor. 50 was being generous.

No clue whether that was pre or post patch, but you seem to have much different criteria than most other gamers. Nothing wrong with that, though. Enjoy your other 50+ games

Talk to me about system specs - my PC is getting a little long in the tooth (2016 mid-range build, I'm on a AMD R9 380). Is Cyberpunk going to look okay?
I know I'm not Starfield ready, for sure.
