re: Are MMO's dying?

I pulled the trigger on FF 14 last night. Did it through steam, but I'm planning on hooking my computer up to my girlfriend's TV later instead of worrying about trying to do it all through a ps4 or steam link. Haven't actually got to play again yet, but soon.

Main Scenario Quests can be a drag, but they're necessary to unlock the content.......which I'm sure is the case with any MMO. What class are you starting with?

I'm not sure yet...I've read that trying to play a healer with a controller can be kinda tough, but I'm also playing with a steam controller which is extremely customizable...I was thinking about doing a white mage or red mage (is that a thing in 14?) but I may just frick around for 10-15 levels and swap classes to try something else.

Red mage is a thing. Healing is fun...but I can’t imagine doing it on a controller TBH.

I may get a wireless keyboard and mouse if I go the healer route...I just want to be able to chill on the couch and hang out with the woman rather than being stuck at my computer. That's the biggest thing. Using the controller for something like harvest/gathering and swapping to kb/m for pve would probably work, but I'll screw around with everything and see what I can do.
What's the major difficulty in using a controller as a healer, most people say it's tough.

Red Mage is a thing, but you have to have the Stormblood expansion to unlock it.
I've always wanted to try Paladin, Marauder, or Dark Knight, but the thought of doing that with a controller wasn't appealing. Targetting multiple mobs to gain hate, marking them for order, didn't want to have to learn that on a controller. Same for a healer.
Back on PC so maybe I'll give one of them a try.

I found being a tank in FFXIV so much more difficult than WoW

I hear they streamlined the combat a little with Stormblood. Rotations were a hard thing to get down.

There is just little wiggle for error. DPS can frick a roation..tank can frick a rotation and still maintain aggro. Heal fricks one up...or has a mis step...can kill everyone.

Targeting is one of my biggest issues with a controller.

I play with a controller and I can say I don’t fancy myself as efficient as everyone around me.. but I have the archer DPS down pretty good. Don’t think I could ever tank or heal effectively.

This was in October of 2016. They have also stated they're going to release numbers for BFA soon.

Controller isn't nearly as difficult as people make it out to be. Just keep playing and you'll pick up on it quick.
But dang, with all these people jumping back on, I don't mind playing these games if people need some help.

I agree with this. I had no problems with controller. I played both ways.

my Conjuror is currently almost level 20 and I've been playing exclusively with my steam controller (via my steam link). The only issue I've had so far (all soloing/questing, mind you) is that occasionally there is input lag. I'll run in one direction, let go of the joystick, and the character will keep running for a second or two. Other times I'll press a button and it'll try and press the button 5-6 times really fast...but that's been my only technical difficulty with the controller (other people apparently have this issue and it even happened when I had the controller hooked straight to the PC playing in bed)
communication, outside of Discord, is nearly impossible. I will absolutely require a keyboard so that I can chat in game when I join an FC or my friends are on. Currently I spend 15 minutes sifting through the translator to tell my buddy that my keyboard seems to be missing.
The ability to use the steam controller with the mouse pad at the thumb, then hold the grip paddle to turn from mouse to camera control is fantastic. I think setting up macro's for things like mouse over healing could work really well as I've learned the right and left dpad to choose my target is iffy at best on how it actually goes through everything.
So far I'm pretty happy with the way it's worked out and I'm slowly but surely getting used to it. I haven't had to get into the details of the extra cross bars or whatever they're called, but I do have them setup to use in the future when I need them.

I've tried with kb/m mouse the last week, and I hate to say this........it's kind of annoying. I do like having all of my actions/buffs/potions/emotes right there so I don't have to figure out what crossbar everything is on, but my mouse cursor gets lost a lot of times in combat and I don't feel as fast on my rotations, especially if I'm having to move around a lot. That in and of itself makes me miss a controller.
Definitely positives to both. I still don't see me doing well as a tank with a controller, though.

The lag may not even be the controller. It's not as if occasional lag is uncommon in FF14. Especially in zones with lots happening.
And yeah, you need a KB to make it work. I'd look into a wireless keyboard with long range to play with your current setup.
Awesome job on progress so far. They've really streamlined some of the early game FF14 stuff to make a lot more playable. It's not nearly as long as it was when Sic and I first played it.

So I still have that flower by my name indicating I'm a "beginner" and I don't know how to get rid of it. halp

I believe it's part of the mentor system or it's tied to game time.
If you type /nastatus off, it'll turn off.

thanks
I "enrolled" in it for the XP boost when I was trying to get Rogue/Ninja leveled up faster. Now it looks dumb.
Speaking of, between Bard, Ninja, and Dragoon, what's the most useful with the current end game? Or which ones do people usually avoid? I read, before Stormblood came out, that Ninja wasn't all that preferred for anything.
