Uh, I honestly think it's better for you to just play what you like the most. All 3 of those classes are useful. Dragoon does the most DPS, while Ninja and Bard have more party wide bonuses (Trick Attack for Ninja, Songs for Bard).

Think of it like this. Every good party has this DPS makeup. 2 melee DPS (between Samurai, Monk, Dragoon, or Ninja), 1 caster DPS (Red Mage, Black Mage, Summoner), and 1 ranged DPS (Bard/Machinist).

Bard is definitely better than Machinist. Dragoon is probably the most or 2nd most used class in parties because they have good DPS buffs and still put out better DPS than Ninja (and most monks).
