Are MMO's dying?

You never hear much about new ones coming out. There are those that are still around like WoW and ESO, but you don't hear any hype about new ones. It seems like the co-op and small group "map" style games have taken over.

all my eggs are in the Pantheon basket. It'll probably be my last hurrah if it ever actually gets released
I don't know if they're dying, but they sure aren't the flavor of the year, and haven't been for some time. All that shite is circular though and I imagine will come back in force in due time.

I actually installed EQ Live almost a year ago, unfortunately at the time I was living in a hotel and the internet was shite (so was the laptop I was using) so I wasn't able to play. They were just doing they're own version of what the Emu servers had been doing for years (progression server with new content every 3-4 months up to a certain point)
I just couldn't get back into it. I played on the Emu servers a lot though.

I enjoyed Guild Wars 2 for the month or so I played.

That game was great, but released with no end game and a confusing as hell crafting system. Still a favorite of mine, it's been long enough maybe I will install and level another toon.

City of Heroes/Villains was my last MMO. I do miss them all.
Really enjoy logging on daily a grinding with friends. Having mains and alts. Love it.
IDK if it will ever make a come back. Esp with esports and Twitch.

It's pretty disappointing, but all the class changes has kept me busy.
Looking forward to launch next month though.

GW2 was my favorite overall leveling experience in any MMO I've played. I instantly lost interest once I got to end game content though. I ended up leveling a couple additional classes before I stopped playing. Didn't bother getting the expansion.

The trend has moved away from MMOs. Doesn't help that the last few Korean ones that have been brought over are super old or just not good.
Since Korea is only company making new ones anymore, have to hope we can more of them.

I agree with that, that's why I loved it. Since I have a new phone number their SMS is preventing me from playing with no easy way to recover my account I am out.

MOBAs and other online games with less timesinks have definitely taken share from what at its peak was an absurdly oversaturated market.
There's not enough time - with many of the WoW-era MMOers now adults with kids - to play like we used to. For many of us our MMO was the only thing filling summer voids. Kids and younger gamers today have ENDLESS entertainment options. The market for people willing to spend hours daily on one game is not what it used to be. Particularly with our diminishing attention spans.
The reality is that unless it's a AAA title with a studio that can execute something very ambitious, MMOs aren't going to innovate materially. If Blizz launched a new MMO you'd best believe I'm in that bitch Day 1 even if I can only play an hour a night. For 90% of others I'm just not interested in starting another trod.
I'm still subbed to FF14, which has done an absolutely incredible job at removing wasted time and trying to make the MMO experience fun. Hitting level cap isn't as rewarding as getting to 75 in FF11, but it's so much more what I want.

quote:The stat squish execution has been a complete dumpster fire. Leveling dungeons are basically M+. They'll fix everything eventually, but woof this has been a bad pre patch phase.

I haven't experienced leveling pre lvl 100 in quite some time, but I've heard 70-90 really really sucks.
ETA: I much rather a really bad prepatch than a really bad launch and first couple of weeks though. IMO

quote:My exact issue with GW2 as well. It was fun UNTIL you hit max level. Complete reverse of WoW, except taking in the pure scope and scale of WoW makes the leveling experience bearable, even in its current broken state.
GW2 was my favorite overall leveling experience in any MMO I've played. I instantly lost interest once I got to end game content though.
Now that WoW has brought back open world, large scale PvP, I really don't see much point in playing another MMO. I understand it doesn't scratch everyone's itch, but there's so much to do that even when I'm tired of doing something, there's another area of content for me to explore. Black Desert and GW2 have been completely ignored ever since I subbed and played the Legion expansion. Admittedly FFXIV would probably get more playtime if I wasn't so engrossed in WoW right now. That game impressed me in a lot of ways, even if the combat is a bit slow. The only other MMO I'll even log in to check is Cabal Online and that's an old F2P Korean MMO that I keep up with purely because it's the first MMO that grabbed me when I was a teenager and it's pure nostalgia.

quote:I played for 6 hours last night and went from 61 to 65. I shite you not, I was in queue for 43 minutes for a dungeon. It's horrid. Healers are going OoM in leveling dungeon bossfights because they take so long. However Ion did release a statement yesterday that they'll probably throw out a blanket HP nerf to most mobs while they work on a better long-term solution and specifically address the 60-80 leveling zones to combat how slow it is has been to level in that bracket for quite some time. Probably going to rework the questing in Northrend and Outland or buff the exp rewards.

I really liked FF14 but got busy with other things during the Heavensward content.. keep telling myself I’m going back to it.
MMOs are definitely as others have said not the big ticket they were anymore.. so in that sense there dying but I think there’s always going to be a place for a prevalent one at any time.

I hit 20-25 the last couple times I've queued and I'm on a lower pop. server. I've got friends on other ones that are pulling 45-50 minute waits. It is INSANE.

Yeah ours last night couldn't keep up. The group I was with was solid and we were still struggling.
The whole thing just sucks and they need to do something ASAP. Reworking leveling a couple months ago and then saying, "hey let's do a squish!" wasn't smart.
