During a recent Morgan Stanley speaking event, Warner Bros. Discovery gaming boss J.B. Perrette discussed some of the company's strategy for gaming going forward, and it includes more live-service, mobile, and free-to-play games.

He said, "We're doubling down on games as an area where we think there is a lot more growth opportunity that we can tap into with the IP that we have and some of the capabilities we have on the studio where we're uniquely positioned as both a publisher and a developer of games."

Perrette said WBD's recent gaming output has focused on AAA games for console, and that's great when a game like Hogwarts Legacy sells 22 million copies and becomes the best-selling game of the year, but this kind of success is never guaranteed in what Perrette said was a "volatile" market. He pointed out that one of WBD's latest big games, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, was a disappointment for the company.

Suicide Squad failed because it was a live-service game and because it was woke, so of course this corporation got the completely wrong message.

I can't wait until the end of this current era of making shitty games/movies from beloved IPs

Helldivers 2, BG3, GoW, etc have been great examples of what we expect as players/customers

Why not both? Aren't those free-to-play (pay-to-win) games cheap to make? And they absolutely print money.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

So much potential, wasted.

Currently playing it. It’s fun, a little more fun than Arkham knight. Arkham knight was average, never finished it, currently on pace to finish suicide squad this week. The wokeness doesn’t really stand out unless I think about what I’ve seen pointed out by others, the bugs are more annoying, but the combat and gameplay are superficial and lacking. It’s fun enough, just feels like bright lights on an empty map without any substance.

This is what happens when the people in charge of these companies don't play games and are just looking at numbers on a spreadsheet

WB games regularly hit Game Pass, including all of the Arkham games at one point or another, so I'm sure this game will end up there at some point.

This might be the highest praise I've seen for this game.

Arkham Knight would've been a much better game if they didn't put so much emphasis on the batmobile. I hated every time I was forced to use it.

I hated the tank boss fights. The deathstroke fight in origins is one of my favorite boss fights of all time. Making us fight him in a car after all of this was so dissapointing.

I played the crap out of Gotham Knights, but I just can't make myself get this game. Watching gameplay videos, it just didn't strike me as fun.

I feel exactly the same. I am a huge Batman/DC fan and would have purchased every game to ever be released in the Arkham universe, but this game looks awful. And that's before we get to the absolutely awful way they handled Batman. Why even get Kevin Conroy to voice the character?

Just killed Superman and I’m recanting my previous luke warm praise of the game. Killing Batman and Superman and what happens after their deaths drop it from a 6/10 game to a 3/10 game.

i hadn't even heard this game involved wokeness. suicide squad just isn't that appealing. I was more excited for the guardians of the galaxy game than a suicide squad game.

for a suicide squad game to work it has to be hilarious and needs to throw in party controls like GotG did.

but no matter what it will need great word of mouth to get anyone to buy it, and if it's a live service game we all know it will go on sale for dirt cheap before long anyway.

Oh yeah that makes more sense. I saw spoilers for these because I wanted to know how they handled it.

Immediately decided I wasn't buying this. Maybe I'll give it a shot if it hits Game Pass someday.

Suicide Squad failed because it was a live-service game
In this case I can’t agree with the live-service element being a causal factor. You could tweak SS into the traditional offline single-player experience, it wouldn’t be any less of a dog shite game. It failed specifically because it’s shite (and it’s shite before you even add the woke)

A well-received live-service game prints money. They’re not oblivious to HL’s success, but they and everyone else always wants another Fortnite they can milk until the end of time. HL is excellent but if single player games miss the mark it’s disastrous economically. It’s not dumb of WB to want to target the juicier model

The next Harry Potter game will almost certainly be live-service. People aren’t going to pass on it because it’s live-service. They’re going to pass if it’s a shite game, as they have with SS

I think the primary lesson for WB is quite simple - stop making shitty games no one wants to play. If they do this the model doesn’t matter

It's crazy that we're saying this about the entity that brought us the Arkham games and the Injustice series. Not to mention owning Mortal Kombat. Their games division should be printing money.
