I think they broke too quickly. I mean, I say take it out altogether, but if not, let me have a weapon for more than 2 encounters before it starts flashing red.

The point was for weapons to be a consistent resource to encourage experimentation. I think they wanted you to switch often, throw weapons all of the time, etc. If the spear I got could last for 4 encounters, I'd be a lot more careful with how I used it... but if I knew it would basically break right away - I'd treat it as a throwaway.

I kind of liked that. I have enough games where I keep the same weapon from the beginning to the end or where I just upgrade the same weapon over time.

I was constantly chucking weapons, breaking and using weapons I wouldn't have before, etc.

It's not as bad as you make it seem, but it's also worse than the sunshine pumpers would have you believe.

The biggest thing for me was how revolutionary the master sword became in the breaking weapons system. It was refreshing for the master sword to mean that much more.

I was still not a huge fan of it, like at all, the first 15 hours or so

I don't think it was perfect, maybe there are other ways to encourage experimentation.

But it also never detracted from the experience. I just wasn't attached to weapons that weren't the Master Sword, but I did seek out and change my style of fighting based on what was available.

It was interesting at the very least, even if somewhat flawed. I'm just not sure what they could have done differently. Unless you think it's as easy as making a weapon last a couple of more encounters? I could get behind that.

Yup, nailed it. Imagine if you had a completely unbreakable weapon - you would simply avoid all battles while you explored except for the totally necessary ones.

I agree that they should make the weapons last longer though.

Unbreakable weapons would also make it so you could just go to a harder area early, snag some good gear and be vastly OP the rest of the game. You can still do this but the good gear you get won't last forever making it probably not worth it.

They also wanted a "live off the land" feel, a reason to engage with enemy camps. If your gear was maxed out early you'd have almost no reason to engage with all the little enemy camps and stuff.

So they had their valid reasons for making weapons temporary. Only thing is I think their solution was a little crude. They could have come up with a durability system that accomplished the same goals without being as annoying.

It's especially annoying early but as you get more inventory spots it becomes less an issue.

Octopath Traveler II also coming to steam and PS4/PS5, thankfully. The first one looked much better on steam.

what?

this doesnt make any sense, imagine if........I have an unbreakable weapon in pretty much every other game and I'm not avoiding encounters because my weapon won't break

I avoid battles in BoTW BECAUSE my weapons will break

Take any kind of open world game that doesn't rely on ammo (the only other expendable way to control weapon usage) - unless the fighting system is super unique or revolutionary or a lot of fun - the the ONLY reason to engage in a battle is if it 1) Moves the story forward or 2) Gives you something tangible that you need.

If you don't need something and an enemy camp is sitting there, do you attack it? Probably not.

On that note, it's a fair comparison - Do you think games should ALWAYS have unlimited ammo? Or should you be forced to look for ammo because you run out?

Weapons in BotW were more like "ammo" for fighting.

Why? Every weapon breaks, there's no reason to avoid a fight. You fight to get the resource, like you fight to get ammo.

But I know, I know - You want Nintendo to make games exactly like everyone else. Because what we all need is more of the same trends. We need another open world game exactly like everything else.

It's a dumb loop. Fight mobs to get weapons so I can fight more mobs. I had the ammo comparison in my head myself and it still doesn't fly with me. In any open world game I play, I don't find a weapon and sit on it. There are better ones out there that I am constantly trying to find. If I do, if the game allows, I collect resources to upgrade it.

I think you're trying to rationalize a mechanic because you happen to like it and can't get over why people don't. I'm all for games going outside the box, but it still needs to be fun. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prime example. They made that game really immersive, which is novel, but most of it became tedious and just not fun after playing it a long while, and that's a common sentiment.

It was a cool thing they tried, a lot of people liked it or didn't mind it, and that's great, but if they do the same thing with Tears, I probably won't touch it.

I mean that's literally any game with combat. The game has to put something in there for you to collect, that must change over time and escalate in difficulty in some way. That loop is legit.

You aren't wrong. But upgrade processes get cumbersome and complex, something Nintendo is usually against. Or are one note like Tom Raider, where you just eventually upgrade each of your 12 standard weapons. But I never use a different weapon once I find the one I like. And they intended to pressure people to experiment.

That was the point.

Na, you always interpret an explanation as rationalizing or defense. I think it's flawed in a few ways, but it did push me outside of my comfort zone. And I did like it even if in some moments it WAS annoying. I'd admit that. I hated giving up a spear when I had only one left and knew I couldn't get another in the current region.

I actually didn't like the system when I tried to keep weapons, but after hour 8 or so I started letting go and going with the game. Whatever the game gave me I would use. That's when it started to click. Don't keep anything. Struggling to keep a weapon WAS the problem.

RDR2, Tom Raider (even though I really enjoy those games), Assadsins Creed... they all have those repetitive elements and have some trouble with real game loops.

So does BoTW. It doesn't make it a terrible game, or the wrong system. At least Nintendo tried something different, even if it wasn't perfect.

I want to stress this again, I don't by any means feel BoTW is a horrible game. I'm not that petty with my gripes. I've loved the Zelda series and it pains me that this one thing kills me every time. I have a hard time believing I can ever get over this hump.

Like....nothing frustrated me more than to find a pretty decent weapon in a chest or off an enemy, try to pick it up and I'm told I have no room. Open my inventory and get rid of a few of the sticks I had in there because I needed SOMETHING as a backup.

I am in the same boat. My least favorite Zelda ever. I just can't get over the weapon system, lack of traditional dungeons and I personally do not like open world.

But I get people love that game.

I am still holding out hope that maybe they do a pre-holiday mini-direct announcing wind waker/twilight princess being available this holiday season. Not expecting it but hoping

Maybe throw in F-Zero and metroid prime and make it kind of a gamecube exclusive mini-direct

BOTW is one of my favorite games ever even with the weapon foolishness.

I have never played another game that made me want to explore every single nook like this one.
