I think he assumed that because he's Asian and he's the racist. I doubt that most people that own a corner store are Asian.

I mean are you saying in that story he typed up he is being racist? If we take his story at face value I don’t know how you come to that conclusion.

Yes he's racist because he sees racism where there is none.

Don’t be so one sided. When a local grocery store expects its everyday customer to pick up a sale item it’s not ordering for other businesses to buy bulk. If roles were reversed you would be scratching your head and thinking the same thing. Relax and have a cocktail with your 2 liter.

There were also people buying 10+ 2 liters. They had palettes of them on the side as well, so it's not like me buying 40 took up all of their inventory. Also it was Monday, meaning it was already 5-6 days deep into their weekly circular.

If they're also worried about that, you'd put a limit on it. Balestra's in Belle chasse does that all the time. Breaux mart does it as well.

That's as ignorant as it comes. So him just insinuating I own a corner-store is why? Because I'm buying a brisket and 2 liters?

It's a known fact a ton of cornerstones are owned and operated by Asians/Indians, I'd garner to bet majority of random cornerstores in New Orleans are owned and operated by an Asian mom and pop. Just like nail salons are predominantly vietnamese in New Orleans.

Well that guy is a dummy. Why mark down if your gonna bitcc about people buying them? The store was going to eat it whether or not every one bought one or one person bought all.

I gotta say, on my very limited visits to Zuppardos, I got a weird vibe from the employees I encountered. It wasn’t a friendly vibe, either.

This is someone just waiting to be a victim of something.

No grocer expects a normal customer to buy 40 2-liters because it's on sale. For you to do that, you're taking advantage of a store trying to reward its loyal customers. It's a good thing you'll never shop there again. Thank you.

I'll bet the majority of "corner stores" are owned by African Americans, Middle Easterners or others.

Is it racist to call someone a business owner?

no, its called calling a spade a spade.

If you saw ANYBODY come into a store and buying a ton of sale items, is your first thought "oh they're taking it to resell at their store"? Because I guarantee you that's not the first thing on your mind.

At the minimum, he was being an arse. If it wasn't racist to insinuate I owned a store and say it as a "you people" comment, than it was ignorant as shite at minimum.

quote:

Which is why I asked prior to even grabbing it. The cashier was kindly enough to tell me there is no limit and "Grab as many as you'd like". I also let her know beforehand it was going to be a lot.

If it was such a significant issue, there's an easy way to fix that. Limit the sale.

But I guess snide remarks is perfectly okay? GTFO with that nonsense. Breauxmart that week also had 2 liters on sale; limit 15 FYI.

Dorignacs does it
Balestras does it
Breaux Mart does it
Winn Dixie does it
Rouses does it
Albertsons does it
Hong Kong Market does it
Every other store does it

I wonder why? Because the suppliers limit them a quantity during that cycle. I can 100% guarantee they don't lose money on those sale items either. I know the owner's of Balestra's very well and they put those items on sale because the supplier runs a promotion. They have the same suppliers as Zuppardo's, notice how smaller run markets run the exact same promo weekly?

They might not make the usual 30-50% profit, but they still make a profit.

Stores use sale items to attract customers to come in to shop. Which it did because I also purchased an expensive arse piece of brisket that costs more than buying it at say Sams or Costco.

For whatever "they lost" from the 2 liters, they sure as hell made it up with 3.99/lb choice brisket when that costs <$3 at most other stores and considering a prime brisket at costco/sams was only 3.29 at the time.

You need to go outside of your neighborhood and aside from zuppardo's apparently.

At the very least, the guy was unacceptably obnoxious. If the cashier was wrong about the limit, then a polite clarification would have sufficed. Since when is a customer supposed to limit their purchases if a sales circular and employees say no limit? A good price is a good price. I once cleaned out a stores Frito Lay shelves buying for an event. The stocker didn’t accuse me of resale—he told me he was happy to restock and didn’t I want some of these other flavors he was putting out.

You were treated poorly. Shop elsewhere. Happened to me recently in Specs in Houston, where the beer dept bros were completely obnoxious/rude to me when I asked a question about availability of a particular item. Complete 180 to the customer service in the wine dept. So, I bought beer elsewhere and politely told the manager why on my way out of the store.

Htran90, you know your facts a little to much! Sure you don’t own a corner store? Don’t let one person cause you to stop buying at Grocery or restaurant. People need to relax bc human beings make remarks since our race started. Sorry you got your feelings hurt but get some tougher skin.

Back to Zuppardo- great iconic Italian family grocery store. In the 70’s- 80’s had the best damn Italian sausage. The deli was awesome... always a line and had to wait and catch up with all your friends while waiting to get a half pound of olive loaf. Brings back childhood memories every time I go back in to shop.

Htran90, One-time I bought the last dozen or so of the canned French Market Coffee from a Vietnamese grocery store on the west bank. An Asian lady started to raise her voice to me but, I smiled bc I did not understand a word she said. I checked out and the lady is still on me, and now telling cashier something. Now the cashier is not happy. I kept smiling, paid my bill and left. I have no idea what went down... but I have a dozen coffee cans at half the cost of zuppardo’s. The best part I still go back to the West Bank grocery store to buy my Asian groceries.

So rather than bash a store take it on the chin like so many people do and move on. If I complained about every disparaging remark made to me growing up I would be an arse to everyone. It’s okay to laugh some stuff off bc you know how people are. Sorry the world treats you bad or you have to bash a business bc one person may have made a mistake or a judgement.

Btw... the old school food bar had the best hot sausage poor boys as well.

In every transaction, there is an expectation of reasonableness. in law it's called the "reasonable man" standard. The cashier told you to "grab as many as you like". That doesn't mean fill up 3 grocery carts full. That is not reasonable under the circumstances.

quote:

They might not make the usual 30-50% profit, but they still make a profit.
If you think groceries have a 30-40% profit margin, you are delusional. It's probably less than 10% A convenience store might make that much. Those sale items are called "loss leaders" for a reason.

There's a reason they didn't kiss your arse to be nice - they don't want your business if you're gonna pull this kind of shite. You were an arse.

Lol, took that on the chin as well, Yankee!

All you hunters on here. Did you know that the butcher who worked at Zuppardo’s for years in the 70-80’s ended up owning Giovico’s deer depot?

Zuppardo sale items on paper taped to the outside of the store is classic.
