I don't have a favorite apple but I do have a pet peeve. When I examine the exterior of the apple it looks perfectly fine. But about 1/4 of the time when I cut into it there are rotten parts. Is there a trick to it or is it just a crap shoot?

softly press all around the apple when you inspect, if you feel any soft parts, those are the "bruises"
don't buy them if they are "bruised" too much

I would love to have my own apple trees
Me too.
And gala is my go to from the store. Might have to find a honey crisp and give it a try though. Usually eat about 4-5 apples per week. Love them.

it really saddens me that it does not get cold enough in the South to grow apples
Not true for all the south. We have orchards here in Georgia

My husband has an apple pet peeve, too. He hates when the cashier carelessly tosses his carefully chosen apples down towards the bagger. If he can, he grabs them as soon as she/he weighs them and puts them in a bag himself. Don't mess with my husband's apples!
