Would a Domilise's-type po' boy establishment make it in BR?

Over the past few years I've been tempted with the idea of opening a po' boy shop in the likeness of Domilise's, my favorite spot to grab this New Orleans iconic sandwich. My business would be an extension to my shotgun-esque house, but I would make sure I have more than 6-7 tables (that's my only gripe with Dot...you have to get there right when they open or before they close to get a table). My question for you folks of the Food and Drink Board...Do you think a po' boy shop like Domilise's would make it in BR, and if so, where would be the best location? It has to be in a neighborhood (Southdowns, Garden District, etc). And yes, I would be using only Leidenheimer bread (they do deliver to BR).

I think you would have some serious zoning problems. I doubt it would be possible. Southdowns is notorious for fighting zoning changes around their neighborhood. Outside of a neighborhood I think it would have some potential.

If you did it though just make sure to get a very good bread like Leidenheimer.

We have a very good selection of poboy's in BR. Never been to Domilise's but I hear it's the crime. Leidenheimer in BR is pretty easy to find.

Will you roast the hams, turkeys and beef? Can I make a reservation?
Keep some gummy hoagie rolls around for the Cou Rouge.

Some of the worst stuff on the planet.
And people actually think roast beef is supposed to taste like that!

Im not even sure how they get that rainbow like effect.. Im just going to tell my kids it causes cancer in hopes that one day enough people will think it causes cancer so they stop making that shite.

Thanks for all the responses. I don't post much, but I do come to this board often and highly regard most of your opinions about food and the restaurant industry. Again, I've been flirting with this idea for quite some time now and would like to see it come to fruition. Realistically, if this was to happen, I would like to get the wheels rolling in about 2-3 years. Just food for thought on this ho-hum day.

Actually the rainbow effect is not exclusive to Manda's, it is caused by the spinning meat slicer blade on the moist compressed meat. I dislike Manda's RB as much as anyone, but other products do the same thing sometimes. I have a home meat slicer and I can get the same effect if there is enough moisture in the meat.

Have you ever run a restaurant?

quote:No, and that's why I'm hesitant to begin with. I'm not looking to start a restaurant with servers/hostess/etc, but rather a simple po' boy shop like Domilise's...walk in, give your order and in 5-10 minutes sit down and eat. If I can find the right location and keep the menu simple, I think it can flourish. Again, this is just something that's been on my mind for quite some time now and I just wanted to get the opinions of others.

Nothing like Domilise's. They actually use frozen shrimp(un-butterflied) and fry them twice. It might be the worst of all shrimp po-boys uptown.

It is what they do. I much prefer their roast beef to their seafood, but there are better versions of each like five blocks away at Guy's.
