I find the Oregon (Willamette) Pinot Noirs to be better than the Napa and Sonoma ones.

Pretty basic question, but why is Sangiovese so hard to find in your typically grocery store? There may be a few bottles in a store that "specializes" in wine.
Probably doesn’t sell as the average grocery store consumer isn’t familiar with Sangiovese. They’re pushing a lot of familiar California stuff

Mostly messing with you, but your double Caymus selections say "rich and uninterested" It's like going to Vail or Aspen because you can afford it and you know what your gonna get, but Telluride or Keystone might just spice things up a bit. I wish I had that problem
LOL! not rich by a long shot. I would consider myself a somewhat educated wine drinker that is, in a state on continual education. I have a wine club deal with Bright Sellers, that is really hit or miss IMO. I still find myself buying a lot of wine outside of the club deal LOL!

I moved into bdx because I can't afford burgundy but wanted to to develop a palate for something old world
There are some decent affordable Burgundies.
They made the classifications a long time ago, and the Grand Cru have the best land, but that doesn’t mean modern winemakers can’t figure it out in the lesser known areas. Mercurey has some really good wines that are slightly more affordable.
Also if you want to do French wine check our Loire Valley Reds. Their famous white, Sancerre, is well known, but if you like Can Franc you can still get good well priced Chinon (not at total wine but elsewhere)

I only noticed because I can't keep them straight and thought I had it, only for your post to throw me into a tailspin of self-doubt

Yeah I did the 1ers and good village wines for a while but I just got bored with the hunt and relatively poor ROI.
My issue wasn't that I couldn't find solid wine in my price range, it was just a little deflating to know that a lot of the elite tier wines were going to be huge hurdles to buy/try. Which is obviously something of a buzzkill when you're trying to learn about a wine and work your way up the ladder. I still drink burgundy I've just tabled it as an "academic" pursuit.
Bdx, in that regard, is just far more accessible (in price and availability).

Haha that is sorta how I feel about all wines.

Nah man I’m a bargain hunter
But I do go to total wine and stare at the $700 bottles of wine till they think I’m casing the place.

Your average wine customer wants something red, sweet, and under $15. Most stores will have an "international" section with maybe 1-3 Chiantis and that's about it.
Whole foods will have the best selection of Italian stuff as far as widespread grocery stores go.

How does Petite Syrah stack up to you?

Trader Joe's isn't bad. Total Wine and my local Giddy Good have great Italian reds.
There's also a really excellent wine selection in the Kroger on Greenville Ave for the Dallas crowd.

Hell, if you're in that area, Central market right up Greenville at lovers is much better.
If you're looking specifically for Italians, nothing really beats Jimmy's. Incredible selection and great prices.

I love that place. There's another small Italian American wine bar down Live Oak in the Lakeview area. I always forget about Central Market.

Last year, the CM in FW took their wine program to another damn level. It's effing impressive.
Older vintages of many, many big boy wines--and I mean big boy.
And their old world selection is unmatched of any wine shop/store I've visited in the US.

Yeah JR is a hoot. Most if not all will have the same stuff though, it just might be in the wood crates in the back room. They all get offered the same buy opportunities when rarities/allocations come available. Even more so with covid killing restaurant/bar business. A lot of on premise stuff got offered to CM in the meantime.

Good to know, TH03.
Yep, JR is good people. Have raised a glass or 30 with ole baw.
And, the man knows his red burg; he keeps 20 or so different bottles of $20-$30 red burgs for incredible daily drinkers. He's my damn hero.
We gotta get you over to Classic to open a bottle or 10.

I did when I first got into wine. Now I will take a Sonoma Coast or a Russian River Valley over Oregon any day.
A few of my favorites are AldenAlli and En Route Les Pommiers. Etude makes a great Pinot from Carneros I believe.

I like them both but I find California Pinot’s are a breed of their own. Super dark and concentrated. A lot of them are opaque which is not the “standard” for PN
And don’t get me wrong they’re good, but there is a time and place for each.

Same applies to stuff like Orin Swift. They aren't bad wines by any means, but as you drink more old world stuff, you realize great wine doesn't have to be an explosion of red fruit in your mouth.
Guys like Wagner and Hope are in another class of fruit bomb than anything Swift produces. Papillon and Palermo are very, very different than 8YITD.
