I'm happy with Slim Jim's as my plan B, but damn why is beef jerky so expensive? I love it, but damn I don't like spending so much on it.

Takes a lot of meat to make jerky
And good jerky requires good meat

Because you are taking a cut of beef and greatly shrinking the product weight wise when it's resold.

Shrinking weight?
Who are you so wise in the ways of science, good sir knight?

I'll ask the illuminati. I'm sure they would know.

The yield is like 40%.

It's $$$ even to make it yourself.

I use eye of round for my jerky and will buy a couple of them when on sale at Rouses or Costco and have gotten them for as low as $2.99 a lb., but they are usually $4+ a lb. on any given day.
The grain of the meat runs the length of the roast so that makes it easy to slice and a good choice for jerky. I'll start with a piece of meat that may weigh about 3.5 lbs. and wind up with about 1.25 lbs. of jerky when all is said and done. There's a lot of weight loss through dehydration.

Because it’s popular. Kind of like price gouging.
Big profit margin or they wouldn’t bother.

If the OP thinks jerky is expensive, he obviously hasn't bought cracklin' in a while. That shite is crazy expensive for what it is----deep fried pork skin with a bit of meat on it and loaded up with seasoning when done.
Last time I was up in Marksville I went to Juneau's on La. 1 across from the Paragon Casino and got some for the wife and that stuff was $13 a lb. and that was over a year ago now. No telling what they are getting for it now.

ever try to make beef jerky?
you start out with cutlets of meat 5 times the square footage of your kitchen, and when done it all fits in a quart sized ziplock bag.

I'll buy a $10 bag occasionally and put it in my desk drawer at work. The problem is that once I open it I eat the whole damn thing.

I make my own jerky and you'd be surprised how expensive it is. Besides meat and marinade, those smokehouses have to turn a profit.

Last week, my WalMart had the 5.85oz bags of Jack Links original for $2.50 a bag. Other flavors and brands that size were close to $8. I bought all they had which was 6 or 7 bags. Grab a bag and scan it to see what price comes up. YMMV.

Damn, that's ridiculous. I've not been up to Marksville in over a year, so no telling how much they are selling it for now. Seems every time I go up there to visit with extended family it is a couple bucks higher each time.
The most expensive I've seen in the N.O. area is that meat market on Harrison Ave. and Pontchartrain Expwy. extension heading toward the lake. I asked what it cost a lb. and the guy said I could do the math as it sells for $7.50 a 1/4 pound and that works out to $30 a lb.

rule of thumb...it takes 5 lbs of lean beef to make 1 lbs of jerky
