Where to get knives sharpened

I’m looking to get knives professionally sharpened.
Where does one go for that? Don’t mean a particular shop but just what type of place.

If they are Shun knives you can send them back to them and they will sharpen them for free. They’ll even fix nicks and some damage for free. All you have to pay is postage. I assume more of the better knife makers do this.

What kind of knives? Are you still in ATL?

Yes. Lawrenceville until mid June then moving to suburbs of Canton. So basically still yes.

I've got a buddy out that way. I'll call him later if I have time and ask where he gets his done.

These are quite old. Still fairly sharp. Not chef sharp, but OK. They do have nicks in them.
On another note, are Henckels considered good or is it mostly hype?

My buddy says he uses this place, because its closer to his house. He found it looking for a place to sharpen his mower blades, and they do everything.

He says there is another place in ATL called "The sharpening shop" but he has never personally used it.

Would you consider learning to sharpen them yourself?

I've not used these guys, personally, but have heard great things. Details are at the site but basically you tell them what you want done, ship them to the sharpener, and they ship them back with a fairly quick turnaround.

Thanks! That's less expensive than I thought it would be.

Consider? Probably.
Do. Likely not.

In New Orleans, go to Coutelier on Oak Street. They're amazing.

Sounds good. I can just put them in my carry-on luggage right?

Honestly? Probably

You can definitely put them in a check bag. You can also mail them. Or drive them.
Seriously, anyone in Nola who likes cooking and high quality knives should check them out. Nice people.

I know cutco gets a bad rap around here but mine are all still going strong and are sharpening in house for free on demand.

I've had my Shun for about 8 years now, and I have not had them sharpened once. They still cut spectaculary. I think I will sent them in though, because there's a difference between now and first buy which tells you how great these knives are.

I don’t see them getting too bad a rap here. I’ve got a lot of them from various sources. Friends kid sold them in high school so my wife loaded up and I use them a lot. I have a Salmon knife that is great.
Other sources are inherited my mothers who got a large set in 1953 when she got married and are in great shape. My wife inherited her mothers from circa 1963 and 2 each 8 piece steak knives in wooden cases from her grandmother probably mid 60’s never used. I’ve sent a few back for various dings and sharpening.
