I typically lean to the wheated variety, but I do enjoy a good rye whiskey too. What’s your preference and why?

No overall bias. Just curious what everyone else is doing to perhaps broaden my own horizons

Rye is best in certain cocktails, like an Old Fashioned or Manhattan. I typically prefer wheated on the rocks or neat.

I agree with this for the most part. I like having some good rye around for an Old Fashioned, but I don't sip on it as often.

They both have a place, but here lately I've been drinking more rye whiskey or bourbons with higher rye content.

But then some of my lesser liked bourbons have a higher rye content - Basil Hayden's, Wild Turkey, Woodford Reserve, to name a few.

It really depends on my mood. If I had to choose I think I would go Rye, because my favorite whiskeys tend to be with a higher rye content. I do love a good wheated though. It really depends if I am in the mood for sweat and easy or desert spices.

I tend to much prefer rye in the mashbill. I would say my all time favorite is GTS, which is the low rye bill. That being said I love some high rye MGP stuff like Remus and tumblin dice. I really don't get the weller hype but go apeshit for makers private select, so guess it depends on the wheater for me

I'll go one further and say I don't get the Pappy hype, other than its scarcity. It's a great bourbon, don't get me wrong, but it's not worth camping out at the liquor store to get, or paying $50 for a 2oz pour at a bar, or paying several hundred dollars for on the secondary market.

If it was readily available, I'd definitely keep a bottle in my liquor cabinet, just like I have a bottle of Weller right now. But I'm not moving heaven and earth to get a bottle of it.

Agree wholeheartedly.... this are basically 2 sides of the same coin since Pappy is weller...so the pappy hype is what caused the weller hype. But that's so much of the bourbon game.... you pay for hype...in relaity there is very little juice out there worth these insane prices. I tell my guy who gets a good bit of BTAC every year, "frick the pappy you can sell that to someone else...just set me aside some GTS"

If someone can tell me what Buffalo Trace is, then that's my answer.

I've had the bottle of Weller in my cabinet for 4 or 5 years now. It's not bad, but it's just not one I reach for very often. It's been so long since I've had some, I couldn't even tell you which Weller it is. I think it's the Special Reserve.

I actually don't mix it up very much and mostly drink Four Roses Single Barrel, Maker's Cask Strength, Russel's Reserve Rye, or Eagle Rare. Which reminds me, 1792 Sweet Wheat is the best wheated bourbon I've ever had, but it's really hard to find.

So is that considered like a more neutral bourbon? I'm bourbon ignorant and don't really know the terms. Just know I and my wallet like Buffalo Trace.

I guess you would call it balanced. More mashbills than not have some rye, I would say most of those fall into the low 10% or under category, so you could say buffalo trace is a pretty textbook bourbon.

For the price point, BH is one of the worse (IMO).
Best bourbons for the price:
Weller SR for wheated
Saz for rye
Eagle Rare for bourbon

Now granted two of the three are semi hard to find. So I’d say Buffalo Trace at $20 is hard to beat.
