Truckstop Honey Brown Ale from Back Forty is pretty close to the old Newcastle in that it is smooth and slightly sweet. Brown ale aficionados will want more of a malt or coffee or whatever, but this is a very drinkable beer.

Pete's Wicked Ale was one of the first to turn me on to browns. I guess they ceased to exist sometime back. Their Strawberry Blonde was also the bomb. Hell all of the Pete's Wicked brews were great.

Founders Sumatra
Great Raft Creature of Comfort
Dogfish Head Palo Santa Marron

Those are three brown ales I’ve enjoyed. Most browns I don’t care much for.

A Louisiana-centered board and not one person has mentioned Turbodog yet? Say what you want about Abita, but they do a brown ale very well.

Dead Guy Ale is a maibock but it always seems to hit the spot when I'm wanting something in the brown ale realm - although it's not all that nutty.

If you like brown ales then you'll probably like most of the Oktoberfest/Marzen beers that are in season right now.

Access to a much better brown ale? You'd be hard pressed to find a much better English Brown as widely available as Turbodog. It's an OG craft beer that still holds up despite the hop market ups an downs.

It used to be every craft brewery had a blonde, brown, porter/stout, APA, and IPA. That was before the first and second hop wars killed off a lot of flagships. Yet Turbodog lives on.

Turbodog! haven't heard that name in a while, but I agree it's a good one.

Lol at the downvotes for dark beers. Wanted to see how many sour IPA gummy worm lurkers we had in here.

Well, a sour IPA gummy worm lurker might know that Russian Imperial Stouts are ales. They might also laugh at your "dark beers" classification.

Really? I take it back if that's true, one of my favorites.

Eta. Negro Modelo, another good one.
