what brands of electric smokers do this board recommend? I love being able to set up a meal and forget it before work. I'm a huge crockpot fan, and I'd love to be able to apply the same concept of ease to brisket. I already know how to smoke stuff really well on a weber kettle, but it's a huge task that takes all day, and I'm lazy.

Which is funny since good pellet grills outperform ceramics when it comes to blind taste tests. Ceramics are mediocre smokers and don’t really require much working a fire. They are the Yeti stickers of the smoking world. If you are going to play that card, at least do it with a stick burner which is better than a pellet.
as someone who owns a BGE and cooks on it regularly, this is true. sure it can make good Q but it can't shake a stick at a real stick burner. it's just too efficient

Masterbuilt

Look at pellet smokers before you go electric. Masterbuilts can be used as a sorta pellet smoker by using and amnps instead of the shitty chip loader though. Don’t use the chip loader on a masterbuilt if you go that route.

So masterbuilts are good, but their pellet loading mechanism isn't? Is there an electric smoker that just straight up works right out of the box? I'm a lazy, but hungry, person that just wants a product that will work with minimal labor and effort on my part. I want to be able to make a consistently delicious smoked brisket as easily as I make my awesome pork roasts in the crock pot. I'm tired of having to babysit a fire all damn day.

Electric - Masterbuilt (Don't use pellets in this)
Pellet - Traeger, rec-tec, Campchef, etc...

I had an old Cajun Injector cabinet smoker that you could use pellets with, and was looking for a new smoker, but all of the electric cabinet smokers now say you can't use pellets, even though they're all the same basic setup. Finally saw an LEM Big Bite Smoker that lets you use pellets. It's much bigger than my old Cajun Injector. Did my first smoke on it this weekend. Ribs came out great.

Masterbuilts don’t use pellets, they use chips. AMNPS is a device you stick in the masterbuilt to let it use pellets. AMNPS will provide 12 hours of continuous smoke if you get the 5x3, where the chip loader you have to load chips every half hour to hour or so and get a far worse smoke.
High end electrics like Cookshack and their clones (Smokin Tex, Smokin It, etc) work out of the box but they aren’t great smokers. They use wood chunks to smoke.
Pellet smokers are very similar to ease of operation as Electrics and put out better food.
Go check out smokingmeatforums.com, they have a lot more in depth threads on the differences.

Bought a 48X20 Klose offset in July of 07. It cooks!
