What pellets do you use?
Posted by Shotgun Willie on 5/28/20 at 2:14 pm10
About to pull the trigger on a Rec Tec 700 and debating on getting the pellets they have. It comes to like $150 for 5 40lb bags. Just wondering if there are others that might be cheaper and just as good. Might take me quite a while to go through 200lbs.

I just bought a bag of those at Walmart for around $14.96 I believe. I’ve used them before and seem to work on every kind of meat.
OP I haven’t tried RecTec’s pellets. I’m sure they are good. I’ve used several manufacturers and never really had issues with any of them. Lots of options out there. I did not do the math on your deal but I wish I had 200 pounds of pellets laying around because I’ve probably used 100 pounds in a month because I cook on my pellet grill pretty much every evening. It’s easier to cook out there on my covered patio than to dirty up the kitchen.

I have always used Traeger and "Perfect Mix" from Amazon. Good results from both. I tried Lumberjack pellets and found they left as heavy creosote buildup on the inside of smoker.

I have a local hardware store near me that sells the Myron Mixon pellets for $11.99 per 20 lb bag. I really like the Orchard Blend a lot.

I keep hearing those are the best. I thought Academy stocks that brand but last time I went there they didn’t have anything on the shelves including lump or regular charcoal.

I just cooked a beef rib on my neighbors traegger. Rib was good, but bark was substandard. Not a fan of the pellet cooker. Just not as good as a junk offset.

I usually use Lumberjack. Can order from Dick's when they have a sale or I have my sister grab me a bunch in Kentucky and bring them to me when she comes visit. I'm almost out so I'll be going buy a bag from SAMs to try those out.
I had issues with the Traeger pellets. Flame outs and find they burn quick.

Second vote for Smokehouse from Sam’s. ~$15 for a 40lb bag, and I got my RT-590 up to 556° with them the other night while cleaning my grill
