I don't think you can justify the price by saying they have to pay for things. In this economy it has to make sense to the buyer.
Sure you can. Why not? Insurance cost more. Gas cost more. Corn to feed the pigs that make the sausage cost more. Electricity cost more. Labor in New Orleans cost more. Tell me something I listed that cost less than when the ecomony tanked in 2007. Nothing.

Judging by the crowds at the place it makes sense to many buyers. This ecomony may suck for some and be a boon for others. That's just life. If you can't afford it go the route you stated or Sonic or Racetrac. The buyer has options.
And I can buy a steak and cook it cheaper at home. And I can buy a bottle of wine and drink it cheaper at home. I can do a lot of things cheaper at home. And I do. But when I want something good I buy it.
The costs Dat Dog has are on par with Frankies Dawg House in BR. Where can you get just say a ham and cheese poboy, fries and a drink for around that? A good hamburger, fries and drink for much less? It's all the same.

I think a lot of people just like to bitch about what something costs and have no clue what it takes to get to that price point.
I have a clue exactly what it takes since I own a restaurant. And like another poster said...I could maybe understand it if they actually MADE anything there..but they don't. They don't make their own sausage and the fries are frozen.
With their move into a newer place, they should've also upgraded to offer fountain drinks with free refills, AND take credit cards.
So I stand by my post from a couple of weeks ago...$7.50 for a hot dog, then $3 for frozen fries, then $2 for a CANNED soda (so no refills) = $12.50...PLUS tax and tip = $15 is just plain NUTS.
When you take your spouse and a couple of kids out for hot dogs and fries that are bought from Sysco, you don't expect to shell out $60...unless you're at a concert, sporting event, etc.

It's a lot of tulane kids eating there on their parents dime. I don't think they really care about how much they are spending.
And I'm not comparing it to 2007. I'm simply saying if you break down what you are actually buying, it's just not worth it to me. It may fit your budget. Yes, I agree with that.
If I want a sausage or hot dog ill make it for myself for way less. I'm not going to sonic Or racetrack

I would think that you would know that I wasn't speaking literally. I was making a point that they don't actually MAKE anything there. I don't know if they actually order their fries from Sysco either...but I know they're frozen.

I get your point. Why didn't you let me buy you a beer or two on Staurday?

What restaurant?

Boo Koo BBQ. Still not the same as a stand alone IMO.

The fries are big enough to split FWIW

That's what I thought, but was thrown off with the word restaurant. Thought I was missing out on something.
Posted on 5/22/12 at 7:12 pm to nikinik
So there's nothing special about the dogs? They don't make their own?
Posted on 5/22/12 at 7:13 pm to Lester Earl
Not sure about Sonic or Racetrack but the best hot dog value is Sam's Club jumbo nathan's dog and drink combo for $1.70.
Posted on 5/22/12 at 7:15 pm to Winkface
I think there is. They just don't drop in restaurant depot and buy the dogs. Some are import and can't be bought anywhere else in the city.

Ok. I've never been so I don't know.

Well normally now when "this ecomony" is brought up I use 2007 as the starting point. And you said it's not worth it to you and I agree. It's not always worth it to me and I'm not saying its worth it to anyone in particular. I'm just saying for a meal of that size the dollar figure is not out of line and I compare a big sausage dog to a burger, fries and drink, po boy fries and drink etc...
And why does everyone say "he doesn't make it there." That's not relivant. He's buying quality products. I can make sausage at home cheaper than buying it at Sams so why does that matter?

What does this matter? Why do they have to give you a free drink? They have to pay for it. Many other places in New Orleans take cash only. That's a way of life and if you live there you should know to stop at the ATM.
And what does it matter if they make it onsite or not?
I'm guessing you handcut fries and cook a brisket from scratch which is cool and fresh but it doesn't make his german hot dogs suck because he's not Oscar Meyer.

it might be cheaper to make, but you also have to factor in the time spent making the sausage & the things that come along with that, such as the freshness.
it would be much easier to justify that cost. "Hey, we spend time & effort making our own sausage at Dat Dog. Come spend your money and try it out.".

This topic went better the second time around IMO.
After the talk here in the last day I'm gonna have to make my mind up between a Buds Broiler hot dog or a Dat Dog tomorrow.

What sausages, specifically, are that exclusive?
I remember some of them being from harahan, houma, and jefferson parish.
I think some of the others were brats and kielbasa that were "from Germany & Poland" respectively. I always assumed it was just a figure of speech. Do they really import them from there?
