1930 until now may be a record to call something a gimmick.
What does longevity have to do with it? If it's something that is too hot for someone to eat, and/or if it's prompting some sort of competition as has been described in this thread ("my wife is from Louisiana, and she thought she could eat spicy food until she had . . . NASHVILLE HOT CHICKEN!"), I consider it somewhat gimmicky. Your mileage may vary.

I mean I guess poboys are gimmicky sandwiches then. It's a dish made famous in a particular region. It's not gimmicky. Sushi donuts are gimmicky. Hot chicken is not.

It comes in various levels of heat, from mild to nuclear hot. Kind of like chicken wings.

That's up to the person if they want to make it a challenge. When you get the appropriate heat level, it's some delicious stuff.

Why? Bad analogy.

Why not? Regional dish that's been around forever. That meets your criteria as gimmicky.

Pop's Poboys in Lafayette does a good Nashville Hot Sandwich. It's hot but not over the top.

So now hot dogs are a gimmick?

I don't get gimmick food items like this.
Hattie Bs is delicious. The Uber-hot stuff maybe, but the not scorching kind is amazing.

She's talking shite how she's from Louisiana and knows a thing or two about spice and heat.
Louisiana is known for overly spicy food? I feel people confuse well spiced and spicy too often.

We have Hattie B's and Eugene's here in Bham now. Eugene's is great, but like another poster said, you never know what heat level you are getting. I've had mild that would melt your face off from them.
Both are greasy as hell though.
Both are greasy as hell though.

I had the same experience when I met a guy from New Mexico. When he learned I was from Louisiana he immediately quipped, "You guys think you have spicy food down there." I came right back with, "No, we think we have delicious food in Louisiana. We don't try to melt peoples faces off."

That happens to me at Taj Mahal. I order the lamb vindaloo and sometimes the heat is just right and sometimes I am in pain to try and finish.

Exactly. Although I do like both.

Chicken is fried in grease
Then dunked in the “hot” mixture which is cooking oil mixed with the spices
People wonder why they shite all over the walls

It's quite an apt analogy. It's an old regional food that has gained poplularity in other places.
There is nothing "gimmicky" about good food.

I think what he's getting at as gimmicky are certain foods that are either so high on the Scoville scale (example: Carolina Reaper hot wings) or large in size (example: The Big Texan, 72 oz steak in under a hour).
However, I agree with you in that Nashville hot chicken isn't gimmicky or to be lumped in that category. It's fried chicken that has been liberally doused in spices. It can be hot or mild (given personal preference).
However, even though the hot can be really hot, it isn't like the "hot wings challenges" were customers struggle to eat more than a mere few with snot and tears running down their face. Simply put, you aren't going to act like Lloyd and Harry from Dumb and Dumber (cue the Atomic Pepper scene) after consuming hot chicken. It is an enjoyable meal.

I’m not a fan.
Although my buddy got a sandwich and that may be the way to go.
Went to hattie B’s
It’s mediocre fried chicken in some kind of powder.
Not particularly flavorful past the skin.
The pemento Mac and cheese was insanely good though.
