Apparently coming to Charlotte soon. Any experiences? More of a specialty item/hot bar place (like Whole Foods) or reasonable price/mainstream selections where can you do “regular” grocery shopping there? Yankees from NY are excited. Seems to have loyal following like Publix in Florida and HEB in Texas.

I see Wegmans like a Whole Foods inside a more standard upscale grocery store. While they tend to have products based on where they are located they generally have the same type of hot foods, meat and produce as well as upscale brands you generally find in Whole Foods but also have the mainstream brands/products you see in a "normal" large grocery store including paper and cleaning products and the like. So unlike Whole Foods Wegmans can be a one-stop shop for most people. That being said while they tend to have good sales their standard offerings are not keenly priced. If someone is price-conscious about the "normal fare" items it would still behoove them to make two stops on their grocery rounds. It could be your perfect grocery store if you are less price-conscious.

The shorthand is they are a great full one grocery store with great quality fresh food but unless it is on sale you aren't beating most of the standard chains and Walmart on price for the national brand items that are essentially fungible.

Used to do my grocery shopping there all the time, they have a lot of Wegman brand products, so they no longer carry Sabra Hummus for example.
I will get certain things there but don't do my everyday shopping there as much as I used to.

What I'm about to say may rustle some jimmies on this board, but Wegmans carries a very good pack of andouille sausage. There's no Louisiana-made andouille at the markets where I live and their pack, usually in the deli section or near the fancy cheese section, is by far the best of all the options. The meat selection is better than Albertsons, Kroger, WD, etc. The really big ones, like the ones built in Richmond, have a restaurant built inside in addition to the hot bar area. Some have a sit-down noodle bar or sushi bar. The one in Richmond consistently carried Louisiana certified crawfish tails, would sometimes have King Cakes, and really fresh produce.

Wegmans makes a good sandwich. I won't claim it's better than Publix, but if you want a cold cut or a meatball sub it will not disappoint.

As others have said the prices won't be the lowest, but they also won't be sky high like While Foods or Fresh Market. Hell, even Publix can be expensive with some things.

i miss living near a wegmans. they have your standard grocery store items you want from anywhere but their produce, meat, fish, and specialty bar selections were far above anyone else around.

they are easily my favorite grocery chain so far.

I guess you'd call it a specialty grocery store. I go to the one in Asbury Park, New Jersey alot when I cook Louisiana style dinners there and can pretty much find anything I need.. besides the smoked sausage that I bring from home. Great store.
