Vending Machines

Not sure which board to post this one.
I am interested on setting up a couple vending machines in our lobby at our new office.
Is this endeavor worth the hassle? Anyone have any experience with this?

Those machines break all the time. The profit per item is minuscule, and you have to rotate out stuff that doesn’t sell (and you eat the product cost). It’s not worth it for 1 or 2 machines because the headaches aren’t worth the money.
Now when they sold cigarettes out of machines, those were gold mines.
You can look in to getting a company to put in and service the machines. Sometimes they will offer kickbacks.

Im sure rotating isnt that big of a hassle since it will be in his place of employment.
I would suggest just calling a vending machine company regardless, its not worth the money over 2-3 machines.

if you have the time to fill it up every day and someone on call to make repairs as needed, they can be very good money makers.
but its a hard way to earn a living so i wouldnt jump in without serious realistic thinking on your commitment to it.
most vending companies pay buildings to let them install machines and pay them a percentage of the profits. thats the best way to do this

In my head, I feel like I can buy a bunch of crap at Sam's and stock it after hours.

that depends on how new the machines you buy are
on average, a vending machine in a very high traffic area may pay for itself in about 8 months to a year, but non high traffic areas it could take 1-2 years.
so you are looking at putting out thousands of dollars just to "maybe" turn $50 profit on each machine per week, after waiting a year or two to break even, and thats only if you are very lucky that nothing breaks during that time

The items you sell out of there have to be labeled for Retail sale. There is an agency in LA who enforces this. Weights and Measures maybe? I can't recall. But its LA so you can be guaranteed they will ignore a pothole the size of a Volkswagen in front of your building but will be all over making sure you pay to run that machine.
Plus you have to figure out how to claim that income. I would guess you would want to set up a LLC and run the machines under that. Are you going to get a Liability policy for when someone sues you because something they got from your machine made them sick?

There is a big thread about this on the money board somewhere. You’ll need a lot more than 2 for it to be worth your time and effort. Seeing a couple more patients a day would probably be more lucrative for you my dude

Are you allowed to do this anymore? Maybe we should start stocking the empty slots in our machine with dip cans and cigarette boxes. Everyone loves dip and cigs at the plant. Would prolly make a killing.

Me and Jamesy talked about this at dinner the other night and he said he had thought about it too.
I'm just trying to get some passive income here
Everyone here has turned me away from even giving this a shot. I figured that with some of the patients waiting a while to see their other doctors, I could make some extra side cash.

I would say residential rentals around Houma/Thib but you’ll need to pay cash or maybe get a line of credit to avoid insane interest rates right now. Babsy has one in Lafayette, talk to him. Economies of scale tells me vending isn’t worth it in low quantities.
